Walt Disney World can be for Adults too

A February 2002 trip to Orange Lake by Chauncy

Magic Kingdom, OrlandoMore Photos

Orange Lake is a fabulous resort and a convenient place to stay for visting Walt Disney World. Of course there is more to Orlando than Mickey Mouse, so it is essential to plan your visit so that you make the most of it.

Magic Kingdom, Orlando
The 'must see' parks in Orlando are The Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney MGM Studios, Disney Animal Kingdom, Universal Studios, and Islands of Adventure theme park.

Trips to Kennedy Space Centre take a full day and are good for adults and teenagers.

During previous visits we have also been to Sea World and Busch Gardens (if you have limited time, recommend that you drop Busch Gardens).

Also worth a visit if you have time is Cypress Gardens (the original theme park before Disney and more low key) and Forever Florida (wildlife viewing from a tall wagon).

Quick Tips:

You can avoid the main tourist hordes by getting to the parks early and heading for the far side first. We used an excellent tourist guidebook to show best days to go to the parks and hints and tips on rides (A Brit's guide to Orlando and Disney world by Simon Veness, ISBN 0572026498).

Due to the lower than normal tourist numbers, when we attended there was very little queuing this year.

Don't forget to make a note of where you parked your car in the Theme Park car parks as they all look the same when you get back.

Best Way To Get Around:

We flew into Sandford airport (which is primarily a British Charter flight gateway) from Birmingham, UK, and collected our hire car.

Be sure to be firm with the car hire company clerk to ensure that you don't get pushed into unwanted extras, like car upgrades that you don't need.

Don't forget that in an automatic car you have to put it in Park first or you won't be able to take the keys out of the ignition (this can be frustrating if you don't know!).

Best Things Nearby:
Convenient for Disney World, Universal Studios, and all the theme parks. Also close to Splendid China, which is worth a visit.

Best Things About the Resort:
Accommodation is first class and there is plenty to do in the resort.

Resort Experience:
It is a very large resort so it can be like driving into a small town. If your villa is a distance away from the pools and clubhouse, you tend to need to drive to the main resort area.

The pools were good to come back to for relaxation after a day in the theme parks. Plenty of entertainment for children, but we tended to go out to eat in the evening rather than stay in the resort.

Serving excellent and original food--you can choose lots of smaller size dishes (tapas style) and there is plenty to choose from for vegetarians.

We also loved the ambiance--it is full of artwork on display and for sale. You also get to talk to the featured artist who is working in the cafe. There is live entertainment and even a tarot reader!

An all around fun place for an excellent evening out.

Jungle themed restaurant - you go on safari in a rainforest setting with all the sounds of a thunderstorm, birds, elephants, and fabulous lighting.

It is open from 11am to 11pm and you may have to wait for a table if it's busy. Even the queuing is interesting as you wait in the shop! The Rasta Pasta was excellent and a high standard of cuisine for a cafe style restaurant.

Only 20 minutes from International Drive, Winter Park is a great place to get away from the usual malls and hectic tourist areas.

We loved the scenic boat tour at the east end of Morse Avenue. It cost $7 for adults and was a relaxing and informative trip around the lakes and canals, and you can glimpse some of the beautiful private houses and gardens in the area.

Birdlife alongside airboat rides at Boggy Creek
Worth a visit if you have time for the ride on the airboat across the swamp. It was a bit chilly in February, so we did not get to see any gators but did manage to do some bird watching and saw the Sandhill Cranes at Fish Camp.

Rides cost $16 for adults and you just turn up. When we went they went out just for us.

The little restaurant at Fish Camp is also a gem - fabulous breakfasts with all homemade ingredients at an excellent price.
