Overview

Quote:
Berlin is Germany's urban center. Most of the country is comprised of small towns and villages connected by winding roads. Culturally, Berlin has it all--from nightlife to architechture to history. These are my top picks if you've got only a couple of days to stay and want to see it all. The Reichstag is the historical building where Hitler took charge, but now the parliament reigns. Checkpoint Charlie was fascinating. The museum recounts the heroic attempts of Easterners to cross the wall. The Ku'damm is Berlin's premiere shopping area. Be careful not to spend a fortune. The Brandenburg Gate is one of the most historic gateways in Berlin. How...Read More

Hard Rock Cafe

Restaurant | "Hard Rock Cafe--Berlin"

Quote:
The Hard Rock Cafe Berlin boasts the largest guitar bar in Berlin. I'm not sure what that means. On display is the trabant car used in U2's "Achtung Baby" tour. Being a Beatles fan, I appreciated the display of John Lennon memorabilia. If you're from America, I wonder why you'd want to waste your time and eat food you can have any day. On the other hand, if you've got a hankering for loaded nachos and greasy fries, then eat here. Food is overpriced, but, well, we expect that from Hard Rock. As always, buy that special souvenir to commemorate your trip to the Hard Rock.

Kurfurstendamm (Ku'damm)

Attraction | "The Ku'damm"

Quote:
Kurfuerstendamm Strasse or The Ku'damm is a section of Berlin populated by various high-end retailers and popular boutiques like Prada, Cartier, Versace. This commercial area is great not just for shopping, but for people watching too. If you're afraid you might have trouble communicating with the sales clerks, don't worry. I went into a bookstore and asked a question in German. The clerk answered me in English. The guy who helped me buy souveniers at the Hard Rock Cafe was actually from America, studying abroad. If all communication fails try pointing and whip out your cash or credit card. All will be right in the world. The shops aren't cheap here, but you'll probably fin...Read More

Checkpoint Charlie Museum

Attraction | "Checkpoint Charlie"

Quote:
Few fragments of the Berlin Wall remain. You'll be able to see some of it at Checkpoint Charlie. This is a museum which gives detailed facts about the presence of the wall. Learn about the triumphant escapes and disastrous captures. It's very surprising to see how creative the easterners were. In one attempt, a secret compartment was carved out of the back of a car. The museum displays actual tools and equipment used to cross the wall. Reflect on how a concrete wall could divide a nation and change the world.

The museum is open from 9 am to 10 pm daily. The cost is 7.5 DM

The Reichstag/German Parliament

Best Of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Reichstag"

Quote:
The Reichstag is the new capitol building of united Germany. The Bundestag, or government, of the country holds its meetings here. February 27, 1933 the Reichstag is set on fire by the Nazis. Hitler uses this episode to rise to power on the pretense that he is protecting the nations security. On June 17, 1995 the famous artist Cristo wrapped the Reichstag, bringing focus to the building which had been ignored. Five million people visited to see the building put to peace. At the time I visited, construction was underway to fix the outside of the building.

Brandenburg Gate

Attraction | "The Brandenburg Gate"

Quote:
What historical sight in Germany is more significant than the Brandenburg Gate? It is a symbol to both Germans and foreigners of their past and future. The gate warrants both respect admiration for its beauty. The Brandenburg Gate or the Brandenburger Tor was built 1788-91. It is the only remaining town gate of Berlin and was modeled after the Propylaea in Athens. The statue which stands atop the gate is of a chariot and four horses. It is called the 'Quadriga of Victory' and was heavily damaged during WW II. The The Brandenburg Gate was restored 1957-58 and the 'Quadriga' was recast. During time of Berlin Wall, the gate was shut off from both not German Easterners and Westerners. After...Read More
