Not just a speck on the map, Tupelo, MS has many things to see and do and just a hop skip and a jump from much more. If you are an Elvis fan and want to see the shack the legend was born, this is the place to go.

I have been visiting this small city for years. The birth place of Elvis Presley, Tupelo, MS, has a wide variety of things to see in a small, hometown atmosphere. You can visit the birth place of Elvis Presley and even visit Presley Lake. This spectacular lake is in the shape of a guitar and is available for swimming, fishing, skiing, and boating.

In addition to the Presley highlights, Tupelo is located on the Natchez Trace parkway/park. This park/parkway runs for miles through Mississippi, Tennessee, and Alabama. It has endless hills and canyons and many view points. The wild life is thick, so be careful of the deer.

Quick Tips:

Take a walk downtown and look at the scenery of the aged buildings that are still in use and some that have been restored. Although it may seem grim, visit the Springhill Cemetary and notice all of the old graves, some of which are graves of Civil War soldiers and other historic people.

The Shack
Probably Tupelo's most important claim to fame, this two room house where the King of Rock and Roll was born, was a definite stop on my map.

Part of the Elvis Presley Center, the Birthplace has been restored to the period prior to the Presley family's move to Memphis, TN. Including the Memorial chapel, the Elvis Presley Museum, and the Elvis Presley Park which includes playgrounds, swimming, picnic accommodations and community events, this center started as the home to the king, built by his father with a borrowed $180.00.

The museum holds a collection of memoriablia from clothing and toys from Elvis's childhood to images and items from his glorious career like hundreds of articles of clothing and personal mementos such as motorcycle boots and a jumpsuit from Elvis's Viva Las Vegas days.

I loved every minute of it; even though I am not a baby boomer, I am a huge Elvis fan. And the nostalgia that came over me was like no other and my wallet expressed it clearly in the purchases of souvenirs that I took home with me.

450 miles of road that is surrounded by endless trees, trails, caverns, hills, and valleys, the Natchez Trace is a wonderful stop for a breath of fresh air.

With a speed limit of 50 mph, this is not a short cut in the slightest. It is a historic trail from Natchez, Mississippi that strectches as far as Nashville, Tennessee. Established in May of 1938, it follows a historic Indian trail. The Parkway preserves significant historical sites such as Emerald Mound, the second largest ceremonial mound in the United States, plantation sites, pioneer inns, archeological villages, pioneer and slave cemeteries and an historic housing site, part of the resettlement program of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. This is truly an historical land mass that all should have the opportunity to see and explore. So if you like the great outdoors, history of America, and the family activity, this would be a great stop to make and enjoy.
