On our second day in Positano, I decided to head down to the beach and do NOTHING all day. My friends and I negotiated the steep stairs all the way down to the Spiaggia Grande - and as I mentioned earlier, expect your knees to wobble. It's perfectly normal (it had me worried for a while). From the Spiaggia Grande, follow the trail to the right, and it will take you to the smaller, more isolated Spiaggia Fornillo. We didn't stay at the main Fornillo beach; instead we headed for the small one BEFORE it.
Rented two chairs and an umbrella. Took out my Byron book. Slathered on suntan lotion. And whiled away my entire day. It was UTTER BLISS. The view before me was stunningly gorgeous. The water beckons invitingly and we took dips as soon as the sun became too hot. The water was clean and clear - that is, until late in the afternoon, when passing cruise ships would dump their garbage into the sea, and you could see all these junk wash up. I was quite saddened by this fact. I'd have expected ships to follow a more rigid environmental code.
For lunch - there is a small restaurant nearby. I trekked up barefoot and ordered two watermelon slices, a juicy peach, a couple of iced tea, and a tomato/mozzarella sandwich. Took it down to the beach. And had a tropical feast. Even until now, the sight and scent PEACHES remind me of Italy. We also bought some coconut slices off a vendor.
When the sun began to set, we packed up our belongings and headed back to town. Instead of walking up (goodness, NO) we took the bus. While we were waiting for the bus, we had some lemon granita - sort of like slurpees, only fresher and tangier. It was incredibly yummy - the PERFECT end to a PERFECT day.
