Honeymoon in Capri

An October 2002 trip to Capri by AndrewL

As part of our honeymoon my wife and I spent four great days in Capri.

I was really surprised by how much Capri had to offer. Being that it's a fairly small island, I though four days would be plenty of time to see everything. I was certainly wrong. After four days there were still quite a few things to see and do that we didn't have time for. The thing that stands out the most for me is the fantastic view high up on the hills of Anacapri. But Capri is more than just a pretty island. There is so much to see and do there what ever your taste. There is of course lots of shopping and great place to eat. But in addition to that, Capri has a number of great hikes with fantastic views, archeological sites that date back to before Roman times, and of course nightlife in Capri Town. Capri is one of my favorite Island destinations and since there was so much left to see we will need to plan a trip back there soon.

Quick Tips:

A number of people recommend visiting Capri as day trip but I wouldn't--with only one day on Capri, you'll miss quite a bit of what the island has to offer as you'll be stuck with the crowds going from shop to shop in the main town. You'll also miss out on Capri's special charm that comes at night once the crowds have left.

Best Way To Get Around:

Capri has two main towns: Capri and Anacapri. The best way to get between them is the inexpensive and frequent bus. You can also take a taxi between towns for about 10 Euros. The taxis in Capri are very interesting since they are all convertibles. I wouldn’t recommend taking a taxi since the bus is very convenient and much cheaper, unless you just want to have a ride in a convertible taxi.

The ferryboats actually drop you off at Marina Grande, and you can get to either Capri Town or Anacapri by bus or taxi. If you are going to Capri Town, you have a third option of the Funicular, which is basically a large elevator tilted at about 45 degrees. It will take you from Marina Grande to Capri Town.

It is possible to walk between Anacapri and Capri Town by way of a series of ancient steps built in to the cliffs. The walk offers some fantastic views. I wouldn’t recommend going from Capri Town to Anacapri this route (all uphill) unless you are in very good shape.

Hotel

This was a truly beautiful and luxurious hotel. The rooms were magnificent, large, and very comfortable. The room even came with its own patio and small pool. However, we were somewhat disappointed with it. For the price we paid I would have expected better service. The hotel just didn’t do the little things right.

We had paid extra to have a room with a pool. However, the first day we were there the pool was freezing. We inquired about this and we were told that the pool would be heated the next day. However, the next day came and the pool wasn’t heated and we repeated this process again every day and never got the pool heated.

There were other little things that the hotel just didn’t get quite right, either. For example, we had the concierge make train reservations for us but he made them for the wrong station. Also the hotel gym was only open 6 hours a day (9am–12pm and 3–6pm). These types of little things are small and they would be a big deal if we were staying someplace less expensive, but if you are paying such high rates you expect the hotel to make everything perfect.

As you can see in the pictures the hotel is truly magnificent, but I probably won't stay here again. Don’t get me wrong, this is a quality hotel; I just don’t feel the price justifies what you get here. Also I would have preferred to stay in Capri Town instead of Anacapri.

Ristorante La GiaraBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Great dining spot located in Anacapri. It is located just a block away from the main square on the main avenue. The menu offers the usual local specialities with a good slection of sea food. The food and service were great both times we ate there.

There is both indoor and outdoor seating. I would recommend outdoors if the weather is good.

Villa San MichelleBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Villa San Michelle is the former home of Axel Munthe, a Swedish doctor and scientist who built his home in Capri. The villa contains a great collection of artwork and antiques. The villa's architecture and gardens also make a visit here worthwhile--there are some fantastic views from the garden.

ANEMA E COREBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

A very fun spot for live music. The music is mostly Italian and so is the crowd, and we had a great time there. There isn't really a dance floor, but most of the crowd takes to dancing on the tables once the music starts around 11pm (it goes til 3 or 4am without a break). If you want a table you need to call ahead for a reservation.

It is located in Capri Town a block down from the Piazzetta.

Monte SolaroBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Monte Solaro is the highest point on Capri. You can reach it by taking a chairlift or simply walking from Anacapri. The walk up takes about an hour and is steep at some points. We did the best of both worlds--we took the chairlift up and walked down. The summit has some of the island's best views. There is also a little cafe on top where you can have a cappucino or snack and enjoy the view.
