Quote: Torrents of tourists are ever present during the skiing season, but once the temperture heats up, Vail is a comfy town with lots of charm. And it won't break your pocketbook.

Sweet Summer in the Mountains

Overview

Quote:
Vail is a great luxury in the summertime. I'm from Kansas where the humidity combined with the heat wears me out. Vail's weather is a much-needed relief. It nearly never gets about 80 degrees and when it rains, it clears up within a half an hour. Where I live, it will rain endlessly for days. Another great aspect of Vail is the expense, or lack of. Although you won't be hitting the slopes, you'll certainly enjoy the majestic beauty and clean air. Prices for hotels drop significantly and you don't have to worry about bumping elbows with hundreds of other fellow tourists. Vail clears out, but doesn't completely shut down. This makes it the best time to visit. We rode the Gondala ...Read More

Chateau Vail

Hotel | "Chateau Vail Holiday Inn"

Quote:
Editor's Note: The Chateau Vail Holiday Inn appears to have closed. The Holiday Inn Vail is located at 2211 N. Frontage Rd. You can view this hotel listing at http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/1/en/hd/egeco.

Although the cost was considerably less because we stayed during the summer, I didn't find the Holiday Inn to be one of the better hotels I've stayed in. The rooms were standard, but not superior. No complimentary breakfast or outstanding room cleanliness. The greatest thing was the outdoor hot tub, but, really, is it all that great to freeze your butt off after you get out? Ah, well. Live and learn. Learn to pay more so you can stay somewhere nicer.

Gondola

Attraction

Quote:
Since there's no skiing during the summer months, buy a 'lift' ticket and ride the gondola up the mountain. The view is spectacular. The ride might be scary for those who are afraid of heights. I'm not. I loved it. My mother was white knuckles the whole way. At the top, she had to take a breather before she could manage going down. At the summit there's a gift shop if you feel you need to commemorate the experience. Of course, most of Vail has gift shops so you shouldn't have any trouble finding that perfect souveneir. Instead of riding back down, you can choose to hike, run, walk or, as my friend did, bike down. The gondola operates throughout the day and the cost is around $10...Read More

Colorado Ski Museum

Attraction

Quote:
Interested in skiing? The small Colorado Ski Museum is full of interesting facts. I've only been skiing once in my life, but there really is a lot to know. Most of it covers the history of the sport. Learn how the equipment you used evolved. See old lift equipment. The best part is that the ski museum is free! Expect a half hour to see it all.

Biking / Jogging Path along the Colorado River

Attraction | "Path along the Colorado River"

Quote:
Peaceful and calm is how you'll feel. The river, however, is rough and rugged. Pick a nice day to stroll along the river and you'll see plenty of beauty. The path is paved. You can walk as far and as long as you want. It's nice to get away from the commercialism in the village and see some real nature.

Shopping in Vail

Story/Tip

Quote:
Plenty of the stores in the small crook of Vail's downtown are t-shirt and souvenier shops. Amidst the commercialism, you'll find the gems. I went in one shop which had hand-crafted wood boxes. Great craftmanship! Another store sold only leather goods--belts, purses, jackets, hats. You name it. The quality of these artists was great. Expect to pay big prices for their pieces. Just as my experience in Sante Fe taught me, when you visit where the rich vacation, you'll pay the same prices.
