Overview

South Afica has so much to offer - it has wildlife, (lions giraffes, etc.) marine life, ( dolphins, whales, etc.) greenery, (garden routes, vineyards, etc.) beaches, (some of the most beautiful beaches you'll ever see) as well as it being a city so you can shop, tour, and best of all the low exchange rate gives you great value for money.

You'll live like royalty on a trip to Cape Town, the fine local cuisine costs next to nothing. After eating fillet steak for about £4, we left a £3 tip and the waiter was over the moon!! He works for about 50p an hour and that's a good salary!!

Quick Tips:

The waterfront makes a really good day out. There are shows on constantly, the marina is beautiful, and boat trips to Robin Island or Seal Island are readily available, but don't buy anything in the waterfront shops. It's targeted for tourists and you'll pay up to three times more than the shops down the road.

When you go to Table Mountain, take some bread with you, as the dassies (a mountain animal) will actually come up to you and feed from your hand.

Always carry loose change with you. South Africa is known for it's crime, but I lived there for 18 years and never saw anything, not even a pick pocket, but high walls and security gates are a common sight, which although daunting at first, are just a way of life there. One of the security measures is when you park your car an allocated person watches over your it. He doesn't get paid for doing this, but it's his way of income so you're expected to pay him some loose change, generally around R3.

Best Way To Get Around:

There is no public transportation in South Africa and because of the size of the country, car hire is essential. Guided tours are arranged and taxi's can be organized for special trips like going to airports etc., but they are quite pricey.

SpurBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Spur"

The Spur restaurant is great value for your money, It's a very child-friendly steak-house restaurant. The fillet steak, salad bar, and Don Pedro is the best I've ever tasted. There are a chain of restaurants all over the country. They're affordable and great value for your money. If you're travelling with children this should be your first choice

Restaurant

The Blue Peter restaurant has a delicious menu that caters to all clientele. Their main speciality is seafood and you can get the best lobster in Cape Town here. The restaurant is literally 10 steps from the sea, so it has a fantastic setting for a romantic meal.

Cafe OrcaBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Breakfast on the Beach"

In Melkbosstrand there is a little family Bistro/cafe called Cafe Orca, it has a fantastic atmosphere and is right of the beach front. I went here every morning for my scones and cream (hence why I gained a stone on holiday) and watched the seals and whales in swimming from the window. It is so calming. One day I actually stayed there from breakfast right through till lunch and then ate lunch there as well while I watched all the different folk go by. It's really friendly run by one of the local families and because of this it's also a great place to take your kids. You eat while they run off and make sand castles but still under your watchfull eye. It's perfect on all accounts.

SunbathingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Fun in the Sun"

The whole theme park looks like it needs a good lick of paint, but it has the same perks as any other theme park and children are happy here. It's been givin a jungle theme so there are loads of stuffed toys to buy in the little shops, although I did find it expensive.

It tries to cater to everyone in the family with sections for really young children and others for older kids. It has a big entertainment area surrounded by restaurants and take-aways. When I was there, a series of wild birds was on-site and you were allowed to photograph and touch them. I was thrilled--and so were the children. It's good fun but, in comparison to Disneyland, it's a big disapointment.

Cape Town TourBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Walk through History"

The gardens are fantastic, really cheap, and a great way to learn about the local vegetation. Squirrels are constantly running around and will actually sit on your hands with the hope of a peanut (you can buy some there). They have a lovely cafe which is surrounded by large oak trees (watch out for the birds above though!! It's said to be lucky if a bird poops on you, but Cape Town weather can make this incredibly unpleasant). The museam is huge and covers absolutely everything. A nice addition is the art museum which only uses local talent and showcases a great deal of history through its local art. When I was there they had an anti-Apartheid themed show that was incredibly interesting.

Vlei FishingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

It's a natioanl reserve so there are loads of animals to see. Small deer, pelicans, flamingos, etc. Otters are a common site. We always went here for school trips so I know the ecological side of it. Best of all the fishing is free.

Greenmarket SquareBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Bargain Power"

The Green Market Square is filled with absolutely everything. It's where a lot of my friends do their own clothes shopping. It is really difficult to move around as loads and loads of stalls are set up and people are always nagging you to shop at their stall. A BIG HINT: shop around!! You'll find what you like at a couple of stalls and they'll all be fighting for you to buy from them; be sure to haggle to get a good price. The market is surrounded by other shops that also make good stops for cheap high-street attire

Blouberg Beach / Blue Mountain BeachBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Perfect Settings"

Cape Town has some of the most beautiful beaches, but two of my favorites are Blouberg Beach in TableView (translated Blue Mountain Beach), named after its views of Table Mountain. It has little picnic areas and a fantastic pub (although it's a long beach walk to get to it). The beach is clean and while I was walking along it to get to the pub, two seals were swimming freely.

The other of the beaches is Melkbosstrand (translated Milk Beach), named so for its beautiful white sands. This is predominantly a surfer's beach, so surf shops are nearby, yet it's still very peaceful and just as beautiful. There are a couple of rocks which are good for rock fishing and finding small crabs and other local sea life.

Rhodes MemorialBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Romantic views"

On my last day in Cape Town, my boyfriend at the time arranged a champagne breakfast at the Rhodes Memorial. It's free to visit and is set quite high in the mountains amongst trees. It's a phenomenal building in tribute to Cecil John Rhodes, but it also has brilliant views. We went down at 7 am ( it gets light early in South Africa), set up our picnic blanket, and watched the sunrise. Purely breathtaking.
