A Day in Salzburg

Overview

Quote:
For any Sound of Music fan, the SOM tour is a must. It's an easy way to see the movie landmarks, as well as glimpse views of the lovely Salzkammergut Lake District.

Quick Tips:

This is something I missed doing, but if I had to do it all over again, I'd check out the Salzkammergut - maybe Hallstat, or the more famous lakes like St. Gilgen and the Mondsee.

Best Way To Get Around:

Augustiner Brewery

Restaurant

Quote:
The Augustiner is Salzburg's famous beer garden. It's big but quieter than Munich's Hofbrauhaus (but we were at the Augustiner in the afternoon). The beer is brewed by real honest-to-goodness monks. Apparently, monasteries like this get HUGE profits from feeding beer-hungry tourists like us.

The tour takes you to all the movie highlights, including the gazebo where Liesl and Rolf danced one rainy night, the palaces that served as the Von Trapp family house, and the church where Captain Von Trapp and Maria got married. The church is a particular favorite of mine. It is in a charming small town, and it's a gorgeous shade of pale yellow. Inside, the altar is EXACT...Read More

Schloss Mirabell and Gardens

Attraction | "Mirabell Gardens"

Quote:
The Mirabell Gardens is one of the more popular sights in Salzburg. Proabably because many SOM scenes were shot here as well. It is a pretty and pleasant garden to walk through, with its formal design, many fountains, sculptures, and benches. During the day, we parked ourselves underneath a big shady tree for a picnic. At dusk, people started coming into the park and the fountains are all lit up. Fabulous views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress in the distance.
