There is some absolutely gorgeous art work during this festival and the amazing part is that most of it is actually painted on peoples' bodies! They have a few crazy contests, a pet parade where the pets actually dress up in costumes (sometimes matching their owner), and a fantastic parade with floats and just all kinds of fun stuff going on that I just can't mention in such a short article!! Just a note of warning - If you are offended by nudity, then this is not a festival for you!${QuickSuggestions} If you can, try to stay right in the Old Town section of Key West so you can walk to all the activities during the festival. Most action is either on Duval Street or very close to it. In addition to the...Read More

Best Things Nearby:Walking distance to all Old Town activities, historic Seaport area, and still very private and quiet.Best Things About the Resort:Great accomodations and super location. No car needed if you stay at this resort. Sunsets can be viewed upon the rooftop lookout area - the place to be at sunset!!!! Great people watching on the marina side - it is always busy and some of the yachts that come in are unbelievable!Resort Experience:Resort is small, high class and maintained beautifully. There is a small beach, nice pool, whirlpool, activities, large marina with fabulous boats, tiki bar, small cafe on the marina side, grills, picnic tables, fishing a...Read More

Sloppy Joe's Bar

Restaurant | "Sloppy Joe''s"

Quote:
Sloppy Joe''s is THE place to go for a true Sloppy Joe''s sandwich. Spicy and just dripping with a great sauce used on this wonderful sandwich. Another super option is the barbeque shredded pork sandwich -- oh, soooo tasty. Food is definitely served with a very casual flair, mostly in small baskets. This is sometimes referred to as Ernest Hemingway''s old hangout, although when talking with locals, I believe he frequented several of the bars on a regular basis. From what we have heard over the years Sloppy Joe''s and Captain Tony''s were the most popular hangouts for him. The walls are decorated with Hemingway memorabilia, and if you can, take ...Read More

Blue Heaven Restaurant

Restaurant | "Blue Heaven"

Quote:
This is a very funky well-known Key West eating establishment (rumor is that it used to be a house of ill repute in the old days...). Tables are located outside, floors are dirt, and there are chickens, roosters, cats, and baby chicks running around and even sitting up in the trees over your head. There is even a rooster graveyard in the back of the dining area.

Cuisine is very eclectic and has many sophisticated menu choices. Specials are usually different and worth taking a chance - I don't believe you can make a bad choice. Jerked chicken is exceptional. Expect lines since the place is well known and definitely worth the wait!

Schooner Wharf

Restaurant

Quote:
Looking for some local Key West charm? Try Schooner Wharf - this is an open seating bar and I mean an "in the open" dining area with live entertainment and good casual food. Very rustic and very "Carribean like". Happy hours are generally packed and tough to find a seat. Great fish sandwiches, drunken shrimp, great drinks, and plenty of colorful characters, many of them local Key West folks. Don't be surprised to see dogs, cats, scuba spears - just about anything you can imagine. This is part of the old Key West - the way it used to be along the waterfront!!! Setting is right in the harbor with boats and activity right in front of Schooner Wharf. Meals are generally $10 or less - This is a "must" if y...Read More

José''s Cantina

Restaurant

Quote:
GREAT CUBAN FOOD!!!!! This is a local hangout and has super Cuban food and a very homey atmosphere. Locals will be stopping in pretty frequently for take-out on a typical evening. Try the fried pork, roast pork, palomila (fried steak), fish, and paella (call ahead for this one) -- anything they serve is just great. Entrées all come with Cuban bread and most dishes have yellow rice and black beans. Meals are served very casually in small plastic baskets. Nice fruity sangria is a great touch and finishing it all off with a wonderful flan is the way to go! Prices are generally $10 or less with a few dishes priced a little higher. This is a short distance from the Old Town are...Read More

Half Shell Raw Bar

Restaurant

Quote:
Casual dining with great oyster po'boy sandwiches, super oysters Rockerfeller, raw oysters, mahi mahi, grouper, shrimp - any way you want it. Nice selection of seafood - very casual - most seating is at picnic tables overlooking the harbor and everything is extremely casual. You can watch the oyster shucker in the dining room if you are interested. This is located in the historic seaport district and a colorful place to walk around and see the sights. When you visit the Half Shell, feel free to donate an old license plate - the walls are covered with them. Some of the plates are very funny. Look for ours - we finally brough one down to donate - it is a NY plate with "LVITUP" as the plate number. Me...Read More

Kelly's Caribbean Bar Grill & Brewery

Restaurant | "Kellys Carribean Bar and grille"

Ths restaraunt is owned by the actress Kelly McGillis and is located in the historic Pan Am building. The building is prety neat and dining is outside (with very limited lighting in the evening) or in the historic building. There also is a very nice small bar. There are many great choices on the menu but my favorite is their coconut shrimp - mmmmm.... There are specials every night and they seem to specialize in seafood although one person in our party had a steak and they just raved about it. The atmosphere is very nice and can be very romantic. This is in a quiet area of the street so it's not really a good place to people watch but an absolutely great place to eat!!!
