Topiaries and Tennis in Newport

An October 2001 trip to Newport by kdog

We stayed at the centrally located historic Newport Bay Club (Timeshare #1510) We were first timers here on a week long stay as tourists. We loved the Green Animal Topiary Garden in Portsmouth, dining at the many fine restaurants and of course the Tennis Hall of Fame.

The Tennis Hall of Fame is a must see for any tennis buff. We had a nice lunch overlooking the grass of centre court. We then strolled through the vast museum, learning about how the racket was made and the length of womens' tennis skirts.

Another stand out place was the Green Animal Topiary Estate overlooking the Narragansett Bay. The grounds are filled with topiaries of all sorts, from animals to geometric shapes. There is also a doll museum on the property and the house itself is a classic white clapboard summer residence. At the Newport wharf enjoy a schooner sail out in the bay. They sell tickets for the sail along the wharf.

The White Horse Tavern was a favorite dining place with the wood beam ceilings and old world charm.

Quick Tips:

Rent a car and get lost. We discovered a cute town called Little Comptom. Coming from California we thought it was funny. Along the way there are great farms and antique stores.

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is fine if you just stay in the wharf area, but rent a car and get outta town.

This is a great hotel that was once an old Mill. The rooms very big and comfy. We had a one bedroom with nice big living room. There was a small kitchen with a refridgerator and micro wave oven. There was always a "free" place to park next to the hotel. Fresh coffee and pastries were served every morning in the meeting room.

Great location and history. Big rooms with all the amenities. Easy to park with no fee.

It's an old mill building made out of brick. Inside, the rooms are well appointed (modern) and overlook the wharf or the America's Cup Avenue. Below the hotel are shops, a restaurant, and a spa. One doesn't have to go to far for anything.

We really enjoyed this place for the history. It goes back to 1687. The interior is old world with wood beams and dark booths.

Candles make the place very romantic and special. We had a great steak and potatoe meal and fine glass of red wine. The prices a bit steep but worth the experience.

Order some nice wine at the bar and strike up a conversation with one of the local yachtsmen and women. The place was really comfortable, filled with old world charm. We ate at the bar instead of the dining room. The clam chowder and warm bread were delicious. The place had great food, service and ambience. It was also walking distance from our hotel.
