Another highlight was a local religious holiday with procession to bless the fields and the hunt. Also took in a local concert. Enjoy the area and see the rest of Austria on another trip. Vienna and area is too far away.
Quick Tips:
The restaurant at the resort is very good as a treat. Supermarket and specialty stores downtown in Matrei are well stocked, and the unit is well equipped for cooking. Excellent choice of fresh buns, meats, and cheeses to make picnic lunches with. We never tired of picnic lunches, try the many different cheeses.Matrei is up a mountain and through a long tunnel, very good roads, so see Innsbruck or Salsburg before you go to the resort. Note the churches, which are well worth visiting just to see the paintings.
Our room was on the fifth level and the elevator wasn't working all the time - this was awkward if carrying groceries (this was our only downer of the trip).
Best Way To Get Around:
Need a car. If you are into hiking then you will be in paradise, as there are hiking trails for all levels. We drove from Germany, but the nearest airport is Innsbruck. You can walk from the resort to downtown Matrei. Some roads are steep and narrow but spectacular views. Read Less
