Honeymoon in Montego Bay

An October 2002 trip to Montego Bay by Matt Holt

My wife and I spent our honeymoon at Sandals in Montego Bay Jamaica. To say that we had a wonderful time, is truly an understatement. Together, we had the most relaxing and enjoyable vacation we have ever had.

Prior to this trip, I had never been to a tropical location. I also have never been much of a "pool person". Happily, all of that changed when we spent a week at Sandals, Montego Bay. By the end of the week, I hated the idea of leaving the pool. Of course, the fact that the pool included a bar helped to fuel my admiration for it as well!

We chose to follow a very relaxed pace for the week. We would get up early and spend most of the day at the pool, lounging in the sun. For those of you who prefer group activities, this place is for you as well. From beach volleyball to snorkeling, they had it all. Then when you add all of the dining options..you really cannot go wrong at this resort.

The staff was the most attentive I have ever seen. By the second day on the property, we were being called by our first names and always greeted with a smile and excellent service.

Quick Tips:

If you plan a trip to Sandals, Montego Bay, you are presented with a lot of room options. In our case, we really spent little time in the room. My advice would be to not worry about spending the additional money for a suite or larger room unless you plan on spending the bulk of your time there. Otherwise, the standard room is more than big enough.

Best Way To Get Around:

I would not recommend leaving the property, unless you are attending an organized tour or function. Jamaica seems to be a little less than safe when roaming around on your owmn..so roamers be ware! But, in all honesty, with so much to do on site, there really is no reason to ever leave until you go to the airport.

Tokyo Joe's is a wonderful, Asian styled establishment. You select your own meats and vegetables that the chef's then stir-fry to your order. This was a great place for dinner. So good, that we actually dined here twice during our stay. The food was outstanding and the atmosphere was awesome.

If you venture into town to do some shopping, be prepared to haggle. It was a little aggressive for me...I found myself becoming frustrated with the approach of the locals. So, if you must shop...take your patience along with you.
