Suprise in the Mid West

A June 2002 trip to Kansas City by Spiggy

I've never thought of myself as one who would like the mid-west ... but Kansas City really surprised me! I think it is the Mid West's best kept secret ... and so do those who live there!

The Plaza, Kansas City's downtown version of Rodeo Drive, is REALLY worth strolling. The city boasts they have more fountains than Rome, and it's not too hard to believe. It is safe, clean, has great restaurants, and wonderful shopping...at very affordable prices. KC is also know for blues and jazz, although we didn't really take advantage of it.

Westport is also a funky little "Haight/Ashbury"-type section of the city. Fun stores and lots of coffee shops, although crowded with young high-schoolers trying to "find their identities." Still worth a stroll if you're looking for some ethnic food!

Quick Tips:

I would stay clear of the business district in the downtown area. It's mostly conventioneers and pretty much shuts down on the weekend. Although there is a good mall and train station with an interesting museum, still you will want to stay and stroll the Plaza Area! Also, the houses around the Plaza area are AMAZING! Mission Hills neighborhood has mansions like I've never seen...and they probably don't even cost that much! Definitely a worthy drive!

Best Way To Get Around:

Parking garages are free, and the airport is rather far from the city, so it's best to rent a car if you drive! For around the city, however, walking is the easiest. There is also a little trolley tour that will pick you up and take you to various places in the city.

Very nice, but too costly. The rooms were gorgeous and the lounge was great and the location was AWESOME! The bad...the price! There is a Sheraton Suites right up the street that was probably half the price and just as convenient, especially if just going for a weekend of fun. If the company's paying for it, it's a real deal. Service was fine, but not over-the-top.

This place had great food and and even greater wine list! We got there early and had some snacks in the bar, although we could have had our entire meal at the bar! The service was great, bartenders were friendly, and the menu was very creative! We really enjoyed ourselves.

This place was so fun. You can eat breakfast, lunch and/or dinner, or just go sit at the coffee bar and have a scone and coffee. I had the pancakes for breakfast and one day went back and had an amazing salad. I also hear they are known for their pasta as well. In good weather there is a deck out back with umbrellas and a good view of the plaza! It was a great atmosphere. Also had a good wine selection.

This place was so romantic and very amazing. You would walk right by this place and not know it was there! Highly recommend! Amazing food...might be an American/French fusion, I'm not too sure. The menu is created daily and apparently you can get random things like ostrich and elk! Ask for the cabernet room and be surrounded by bottles. The waiters look too young to know what they're talking about, but we had amazing service! It's a must if your budget can swing it!
