Being from Tennessee, I had never seen mountains like those I saw in Glacier National Park. The word that comes to mind first and foremost is 'magnificent'.

Glacier National Park
During our visit to Montana, we stayed in West Glacier, just one-half mile from the west entrance to Glacier National Park. This is a prime location because you have views of the spectacular peaks in the park without the inflated prices that go along with actually staying inside the park. In an entire week, we never longed for something fun to do. Between the hiking, sightseeing, and bear-watching, we also had time to simply relax. Although we were surprised by an overnight snow storm that closed the main road into the park on our last day, we couldn't help but be thrilled by the gorgeous snowcapped mountains!

Quick Tips:

Although we did stay a couple of nights inside the park (at The Many Glacier Hotel), we preferred staying outside the park because there were more restaurants and shops from which to choose.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving is the way to go here. You will definitely want to take the scenic drive along Going-to-the-Sun Road.
Our log cabin provided all the luxuries of home along with breathtaking views of the mountains. They're conveniently located just half a mile from the Park's west entrance and offer separate sleeping and living areas, complete kitchen, full bath, television, covered deck, gas grill and gas fireplace to warm a cool Montana night. While staying at the cabins you might try your hand at tossing the shoes at the horseshoe pits or maybe playing a game of volleyball. There is also an outdoor pavilion for larger gatherings and a trout pond to perfect your fishing techniques.

Many Glacier Hotel
Many Glacier Hotel, a grand old historical lodge, sits on the shores of Swift Current Lake, where boat tours take guests into a wilderness wonderland from which they can view living glaciers. In keeping with the era in which the hotel was built, televisions, elevators and air conditioning are NOT available. All rooms are non-smoking. Cozy seating areas are available in the massive lobby for quiet fireside socializing, reading and writing, and magnificent scenery can be viewed from the large picture windows throughout the lobby.

Avalanche Lake Trail
Avalanche Lake Trail takes you past the very beautiful Avalanche Gorge before meeting with the Avalanche Lake trailhead. The trail to Avalanche Lake is approximately 2.2 miles long with an elevation gain of approximately 500 feet. It primarily takes you through the forest, with occasional glimpses of the mountains. Avalanche Lake is a beautiful aqua-colored lake surrounded on 3 sides by mountains and waterfalls. We saw a total of 8 deer on our hike back down the trail.

Iceberg Lake is a striking aquamarine tarn surrounded on three sides by towering cliffs. The bergs for which the lake was named may be seen floating until mid-July or later. There are beautiful wildflowers along the route, making this trail one of the most popular hikes in the park.
