Easter in Newport

A tour of the Newport mansions is required. Unfortunately we only had time to tour one, but I would recommend trying a couple. Just driving past is amazing!

One of the best moments was my sister and I "frollicking" on the back lawn of Breakers after the tour. We went all the way to the Cliff Walk, but of course there wasn't an entrance to it there.

Shopping in downtown Newport was a hoot. I found a shop that mainly sold Harmony Kingdom collectible boxes, my new obsession. Great fun!

Quick Tips:

Get some salt water taffy and chew it as you walk around the town. Take a walk down the Cliff Walk. Remember to wear good shoes with good soles as it can be dangerous climbing over rocks, but wow, it is thrilling!

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving is a must as the whole town should be viewed. Stop from time to time to get out and walk.

We arrived a little late for lunch, but the wait was still about an hour. It was worth it, however. The menu is varied with everything from salads and sandwiches, to Southwestern fare and steaks. I had a cheeseburger and fries that was so large that I was unable to finish half of it. Our waitress was wonderful and the atmosphere was casual and warm. The restaurant is much larger than I at first believed. We were seated in the front room, but when I went to the restroom, I found that it goes on and on. It is decorated in dark wood, a fireplace and kitchy memorabilia from the town. It is a great place for the family to dine out or for a fun night with some friends.

Harmony Kingdom figurines are from England and are highly collectable. My mother gave me my first one a couple of years ago, and ever since I've been fascinated with them. No surprise, then, when we walked into Stardust in Newport that I was over the moon. Stardust is a major retail outlet for Harmony Kingdom box figurines in the United States. Most of the figurines are of very expressive animals (human characteristics) and are small boxes as well. The box figurines are called treasure jests and each has a story and special meaning.

The shop owner was working when I was there and she has loads of information regarding Harmony Kingdom. They even have a club that hosts special events throughout the year. At the time they were planning a Cheeseburger in Paradise party for the release of a new figurine (a parrot) and a visit by the artist in June. Of course I joined, even though I live in Minnesota. She said that she had members all over the country as there are few shops that carry the collectables.
