Sabah Sunsets

Overview

Quote:
Sabah offers a bit of everything: excellent diving spots and relaxed beaches, great cuisine, off-road treks, mountain hiking and bargain-hunting in Kota Kinabalu are just few of the options.

Quick Tips:

- Pick up a few basic words of malay; it's easy, and you'll get on with people much easier
- Don't be afraid to bargain for a better price when cruising marketplaces and small shops

Best Way To Get Around:

Taxis in KK are cheap and widely avaliable. The bus system can be rather confusing, and it helps to ask around.

Quite comfortable two-bed rooms with a kichenette and bathroom - perfect for a budget traveler. Full air-conditioning and clean bathrooms, as well as ample space. 5 minutes of walking distance from the city center and situated near a large shopping complex. Cheap restaurants and food stalls avaliable just downstairs in the ground area of the complex.

Rather good and friendly service. Rooms are situated in a standard appartement complex, so you're sharing the block with locals.

Price of rent is RM 68 for a two-person room - quite comfortable, altough you can easily find youth hostels in KK at cheaper rates.

The local marketplace in Kota Kinabalu is a treat for your tastebuds, like most such places in Malaysia. A huge variety of local foods, including a wide range of local marine life, standard Malay and Moslem cuisine, Chinese and local deserts, plenty of local fruits. As the marketplace is located near the seaside, add a breathtaking sunset into the bargain and you got yourself a best meal for the price of three cans of Coke in Europe. A good tip is the fish - fresh from the sea, well-spiced with chili and served piping hot from the grill. Besides the usual nasi ayam, goreng and variations of mee (noodles), you can also find a huge range of deep-fried sweet deserts to cater your taste. If the exce...Read More

Jothy's Curry

Restaurant

Jothy's Fish Head Curry restaurant is one of the few places in Kota Kinabalu offering Indian cuisine for the hungry traveller. If you're crazy about indian food, you can hardly find a better place to still your hunger. The food is fresh and tastes great - check out the fish or, if you're just out for a quick snack, the Rava Tossé (not sure about the spelling here), light indian tosse pancake stuffed with delicious vegetable dish. The lassi is also worth a mention - both the mango, sweet and salty are good, but for a special treat check out the special version featuring fresh chilis. The place can be packed around lunchtime, as it seems to be one of the favourites of the local office workers. ...Read More

Borneo Action Diveshop

One of the best dive shops, I've been to yet. The equipment is kept in perfect order, the staff is very friendly and outgoing - all diving fanatics from various corners of the globe. Full set of PADI courses on offer at reasonable prices (I took my Rescue Diver there) - instructors are dedicated to teaching the skills rather than just push you through the course (as is unfortunately the case with many dive joints in tourist-frequented areas). Dive trips are a full-day-out to one or two of the five islands of TAR Marine Park and include 2 dives + full equipment rental. There is ample opportunity to take a snorkelling tour, during your surface rest between dives. The divemasters are well-versed in...Read More

A pretty decent diveshop. I went out for a day out, when my regular diving buddies were taking a day on the shore. The centre is quite small but the staff is friendly. The equipment is all-right without anything fancy.
