Sirolo in the Spring

An April 2002 trip to Sirolo by mattpower

A three day break on the Riviera del Conero, 10 miles south of Ancona.

Sirolo is a beautiful part of this, as of yet, undeveloped coast. Lying just south of Ancona, the resort rests on a cliff top overlooking the clear waters of the Adriatic. Only a small place, therefore its best explored by foot. The main square, Piazza Veneto, has great views of the sea and of nearby Monte Conero, and is a lovely place just to sip a cappucino in one of the bars. Walking through its many pedestrianised alleyways is also a real pleasure. If here in the summer then the beaches are recommended - there are in fact two, Sassi Neri and San Michele.

Quick Tips:

The tourist office on Piazza Veneto is well stocked with local maps of the riviera, especially if you are a walking enthusiast. Be prepared to walk alot and uphill too as the main center is located on a cliff top. Lots of restaurants that are all reasonably priced, with Ristorante Della Rosa being the best of them all. Hotels can get booked up quickly as its a popular place for locals so I recommend staying at the campsite in one of their quaint log cabins. Camping Internazionale is cheap and friendly (42 euros for a two bed cabin in low season and 78 suros in August).

Best Way To Get Around:

Walking is the only way. The best way to get to Sirolo is by bus from Ancona. They run approximately every hour from outside Ancona train station and takes 40 minutes.
Set in lovely woodlands overlooking the sea and only a three minute walk to the center of Sirolo. We stayed in a one bedroom mobile home that came equipped with kitchen facilities and bathroom/shower. The site has its own bar and supermarket and is only two minutes from the sandy beach.

An excellent local restaurant situated on a cliff top overlooking the clear waters of the Adriatic. Staff are very friendly and the food is wonderful. Recommended dish is the caprese salad. Also serve up excellent stone baked pizzas.
