Zanzibar is a place of contrasts. Compared with much of Christian Eastern and Southern Africa, this Muslim island has a unique and vibrant culture that has been enriched over centuries of history.

Overview

Zanzibar harbour
Staying in Stone Town for a few nights is a must. Getting lost around the streets is great fun (but see how long you can handle the often aggressive store owners), and there are plenty of bargains to be found. The nighttime food markets are also a treat - just try not to think about hygiene too much.

The northern beaches are beautiful - turquoise water, pale white sand, and a surprisingly low number of tourists!

Quick Tips:

Spice tour is one of those things everyone does, so you'll do it anyway, but its probably not worth it. Depends what you want, I guess.

Best Way To Get Around:

Once at each location, go on foot. Otherwise, either locally arranged tour or local transport.

There's a great range of foods here - specialties include a big choice of fish -all fresh caught and cooked - sugar cane juice, and of course the Zanzibar Pizza. Not your usual pizza - its kind of a pastry/omelette thing, and you can get either savory (veggies and meat) or sweet (chocolate or banana) - or get both!

Lots of locals wanting to talk to you, too - they're not going to do anything, just want to talk to learn some English (though watch out for an offer of a tour as you're leaving).
