Nijmegen comes from the Latin "novio magus" or new market and was the main entry point or "highway" to the Netherlands during ancient Roman times. Discover the new in this old city by visiting the newly built museum which houses an impressive collection of ancient Roman art. Or pass by the city''s newest shopping street where a modern public library reflect''s Nijmegen''s vibrant multi-cultural life. Waalkade is the city''s main river-side boulevard and there one can view the historical bridge to Arnhem which earned its measure of fame in the movie A Bridge Too Far. Several other gems, such as museums, parks, wooded bike lanes, and natural reserves, await travellers. For nightlife goers, there are countless cafes, bars, and a popular casino all within walking distance.

Quick Tips:

As in almost any Dutch city or town, biking is the best way to explore Nijmegen. In the city center, walking is much recommended since almost all the major museums, the church and shopping center are within walking distance. And do not miss the parks and the weekly Saturday market where one can feel the beat of daily Nijmegen life.

Best Way To Get Around:

An efficient transport alternative is the public bus. There is a day card for about 5€. There is no need to worry about getting lost since drivers and the locals are ready to offer information.

Restaurant

For the prompt, friendly service and the high quality and taste of the dishes, this restaurant would certainly become an easy favorite for visitors. The atmosphere can be described as cosy and stylish, clean and comfortable. Waiters promptly describe what ingredients are used in a dish and are not intrusive. They also have a 3 or 4 course menu called 'surprise menu' where the cook decides what is best after the client mentions, if any, certain food preferences. A surprise, 3-course menu with two drinks for two would cost about $ 70, a real value for money treat.
