Bagpipes, a castle and so much more!

An August 1998 trip to Edinburgh by LadyDree

Edinburgh has become very popular and has the typical conveniences of a large city. However with the majestic Edinburgh Castle overlooking and protecting the city, you cannot forget the history and old world charm that still lies here.

You have to go to Edinburgh in August! It is the busiest time to visit, but so worth it.

My friend and I stayed at the Castle Rock Hostel, located behind the Edinburgh Castle. It was a great hostel as far as hostels go, a very friendly atmosphere.

We had tickets for the Military Tattoo that takes place at the Edinburgh Castle courtyard. It is THE reason to go to Edinburgh in August. Imagine 150 bagpipers playing Auld Lang Syne with 8000 people visitors singing along, the sun set, torches lit and highland dancers joining in. You will never hear Auld Lang Syne that way again, not even on your best New Year's Eve

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival also runs in August. There are many shows to choose from. The popular Princes Street becomes very busy with people and street artists, from jugglers, to fire eaters, to a man curled up inside a suitcase! That's right, I said suitcase.

Edinburgh is truly one of the great cities of the world. It is blessed with beauty and old charm. The people are friendly, the scenery is beautiful, the pubs are fun and the whiskey tours, tasty.

Quick Tips:

Edinburgh is for every kind of traveller, from the budget to high class. My trip was on the budget side. There are several hostels to choose from, I recommend the Castle Rock hostel. It seems to be the only one in the heart of the city.

On your trip to Edinburgh, be sure to visit the Castle, Princes Street and St.Giles Cathedral, you'll be amazed. Edinburgh has a lot of history that you don't want to miss.

Best Way To Get Around:

You can definitely get around this city on foot. Infact, I recommend it because you don't want to miss out on anything this city has to offer. The transit systems is also fairly good, I took it a few times.

The sun is setting, the torches are lit. In the courtyard of the great Edinburgh Castle, 150 bagpipers are playing Scottish Tunes with hundreds of highland dancers. To close out the evening, 8000+ people sing Auld Lang Syne. You can't help but get a bit teary-eyed hearing that song in the country of its origin, in such a magnificent place.
