Fa’a Samoa is not for everyone. Events may not start or end on time and restaurants may not open when the signs say they will. But if you don’t mind a slowed-down pace, Samoans are among the friendliest people on Earth. American Samoa, about 2600 miles from Hawaii, is the only American territory south of the Equator. Independent Western Samoa - or simply ‘Samoa’ - is just 60 miles further away. They share the same culture and language, but there are interesting differences between the two. American Samoa has richer, greener forestation, higher mountains, and a more scenic seacoast. Some of the smaller Samoan islands are described as beautiful, unspoiled, undevelope...Read More

Too well-furnished to be just another bed and breakfast, but too small to be called a hotel, Ta’alolo is a comfortably furnished, four-bedroom home whose owner opened it to guests after her grown children moved out. She’s an avid golf enthusiast - one of her daughters is a pro - and it’s no coincidence that her home is just a five-iron shot from American Samoa’s only golf course. For U.S. $135 per night one guest or couple gets the elegantly-appointed Owner’s Suite, with it's own large bathroom (two washbasins plus a dressing area with makeup mirror). The $95/night bedrooms share a common bath and a nicely-appointed reading area. Factoid about "crime" in Samoa: the bedrooms have no locks. ...Read More

Tutuila Island Taxi Charter

Attraction

Despite the cost, DO hire a taxi for a half-day and ask the driver for a customized tour of the island of Tutuila. That won’t be enough time for the scenic north coast, but you’ll see most of the other highights. If your hotel can’t provide a map for you, ask the driver to stop at the National Park Service Visitor Center and pick one up. Pago Pago Harbor is one of the largest and best harbors in the entire South Pacific; it nearly cuts the island in half, and was a huge asset to the U.S. Navy during World War II. A drive around the harbor offers superb coastal and mountain scenery; you’ll encounter several excellent photo opportunities and pass some stunning beaches. This drive wil...Read More

Is it TOO AMERICANIZED?

Story/Tip

An American Icon in Samoa Photo, American Samoa, South Pacific

Is American Samoa too "Americanized"? At least one travel advisor thinks so. The capitol city, Pago Pago, certainly has an American industrial flavor - there’s a large containership port, a U.S. National Park Service visitor center, and a huge American-owned tuna-canning plant which is by far the largest employer in either American or Independent Samoa (though it provides more than 3,000 jobs, people predictably grouse about the aroma). Kids also ride to school on classic American-style schoolbuses. Prices, too, tend to be more American than Samoan. They’re quoted in U.S. dollars and far higher than those in Independent Samoa. Chartering a taxi for a half-day tour of Amer...Read More
