I was shooting various features for television in Afghanistan earlier ths year. The situation in Kabul is relatively `under control', with roads bieng built and power supply available- albeit for just 12 hours a day. However, even that dosent necessarily mean safe- there are any many factions/ warlords/ etc that still call the shots. The people were extremly warm and welcoming in a general sense, but the past has ensured that there isnt one opinion doing the rounds among Afghans. water is a scarcity in afghanistan after 6 yrs of drought of course.

cable tv, newspapers every evening- albeit from pakistan, reasonable meals- and friendly staff from the guesthouse/office

curio shops stocking postcards, boxes made of the famous afghan blue stone, musical instruments, beautiful afghan carpets, and daggers! i was looking for carpets, and i was taken to a different market by mahajir, our guide. much more variety, much cheaper, and much more beautiful. the designs, colour, and the fabric were amazing- (i bought two:)) the grocery stores stock every snack that you can concieve in the west- its quite a srange sight at first... it comes from the numerous aid agencies, troops, and assorted western presence i guess. fruit juice from uzbekistan, jam from pakistan, bottled water from italy, cheese from austria... it's all there. bieng the main `tourist...Read More
