Puno

Overview

Quote:
Five days in Puno is enough. A visit to the floating islands is a must and staying with a family on the Amantani is also a nice experience. There are some quite good restaurants, and there is a very busy market which you have to spend two hours to see it all.Quick Tips: Take it easy for the first day as the altitude sickness can effect you. Always try to carry Coramina as they help you breathing.Best Way To Get Around: From Arequipa we took the Ormeno Bus. The road is pretty rough and tiring, as you have to adjust to travelling in the altitude. The bus was comfortable but it was also scary at times - the driver was really driving fast!!! Inside Puno. taxis are definitely the best way...Read More

The hostal has 13 rooms and all have hot water, an electric heater, and TV. You can also ask for a hair dryer at the reception. The breakfast is also good, but you have go for it before half past nine - after that there will be no breakfast. The English language at the hotel is a bit problematic!!

In Sillustani there are the most impressive towers called Chullpas. The tallest of them reaches a height of about 12 metres. These towers were used to bury the nobles of these people called Colla. They were buried in family groups. They used to bury food and belongings with them as they believed that they will need them in their journey to the next world. The only opening from the towers is a small hole that faces east. After the burial, the entrance was sealed. These chullpas were not build by the Incas, and some of them are still unfinished. On some of the chullpas you can see carvings, such as a lizard. From Sillustani there is also a fantastic view of the lake. We went to Sillustani with E...Read More

In Chucuito there is an old Inca Ruin with a heap of phallic symobls around the Place. As soon as we arrived we were welcomed by a little girl who wanted to take us around, so she was our tour leader. She was actually really good!! She was soon joined by two little boys. They seemed to know the explanation by heart. In the ruin there was a nice place to observe the sun and the solstices. The phallic symbols represent the fertility. There are some carvings on the wall such as snakes. There is a Church of Santo Domingo, a cemetery, and a nice little square. On the July 26th the people were rehearsing for the march of the Independence day. Chucuito is worth visiting as you can get a gl...Read More
