On the beautiful blue Danube....

A June 2002 trip to Budapest by PrincessMarina

This is just my point of view of this town.So I will give you some useful informations, but not the full decsription of the city. So,here I go-The Danube divides the city in two parts-the old one Buda is on the hill, and the new one Pesta is one the easter side.Very unique, with great architecture and especially if you are interested in culture, there are tons of things to see!!!

First thing that you have to do when you arive in Budapest is climbing on the hill. There is a magnificent view of the Pesta and the Danube and it seems like the time has stopped there.

The streets are narrow, with cobbled pavement. There are a lot of souvenir shops and you can buy the famous wooden dolls. You must not avoid the beautiful pastry-shops - they have a long tradition and the cakes are delicious!!!

If you are a shopping maniac your destination will be the Vatzi street where you can find lots of boutiques. But also there is a Chinese market (very popular with the tourists) where you will find almost the same clothes as in the boutiques.

Quick Tips:

Be careful where you exchange your money. Ask in every shop could they change your money, because they will give you much more than the exchange offices or the banks. But don`t change money on the streets!!! You can easily be robbed!!!They will give you a large amount of money, but in the middle you`ll find only papers cut in the size of money.

Also be careful when you are walking in the underground tunnels. They're home to drug dealers and junkees.

Best Way To Get Around:

Don`t get a taxi. There's a traffic jam all day long, and there are lot of busses that can get you to your destination very fast and the price of the ticket is only 2-4 Euros. There's also a subway, but there are a lot of pickpockets there!!!

Be careful, you might get lost and almost nobody speaks English - not even the police or the tourist bureau workers!

The people where I stayed (I had a room in their apartment with my two friends)were very friendly, but they didn`t understand a word of English. So improve your pantomime abilities before you go there.

This is the best Magyar restaurant. If you don`t eat here, it'll be like you`ve never been to Budapest. And forget about your diet!!!

You must try the world famous goulash - it tastes like heaven here!!!! After that of course have a piece of cake and you`ll fell mmmmmmmmm.....

Attraction | "Budapest Zoo"

It's very big and very clean. You can see lot of different species, but ask for your map at the entry. There are a lot of people there and if you are with kids be careful not to lose them - I found a lost girl when I was there and I had to spend two hours with her until her mom found her!
