Business Travel to Colombo

An August 2002 trip to Colombo by sridharpandu

Business Travel can get boring if all you do is to return to an empty hotel room and relax to the hum of airconditioners! On the otherhand if you venture out you would get an opportunity to meet local people, sample the local cuisine and ofcourse carry back some memories.

On a business trip whatever you have to do has to be done in the evenings so sighseeing is out unless you get to spend the weekend. But you can do a great deal of shopping (Colombo is extremely cheap), visit some of the finest bar & restaurants and down some drinks. The last one being propotional to the per diem or expense account you are entiled to!

Quick Tips:

If you are a shopping addict I suggest that you carry an empty suitcase (or better still buy one in Colombo) to carry home all the things you have bought. Also save some money to pay for excess baggage!

Best Way To Get Around:

A car is the best way of getting around in Colombo; there are plenty of imported cars. I have seen Jaguars (X type as well as the S type), Lexus, Mercedes, Porsches etc. Personally I travelled in a Toyota, Honda and a VW Beatle. There were several of them who took us around in different cars. The beatle was a personal favourite of one of the guys and it was his second car. The first one was a Toyota. I am not sure if there are any Hertz or Avis rent-a-car. There are taxis (mitsuibishi vans) to get around especially from the airport to the city which is a full 60 minutes drive. Within Colombo use the "Tut Tut" which is a three wheeled automobile, also found in India as the "Auto Rickshaw". The "Tut Tuts" are rash and better negotiate a rate before you climb into one of them. There are several buses and local trains but never got an opportunity to use them.
Pure elegance, British architecture, started in 1864. The Galle Face Hotel has played host to the who's who. Almost everybody who's somebody in this world has stayed here or that's what the plaque near the staircase says. The floors are wooden and sometimes squeak, (honeymooners avoid this place). Ask for the rooms with the view of the sea, especially rooms 106, 206 and so on. You can sleep while the tides sing the lullabies. The Cable TV chanels are very limited, BBC, CNN, Rupavahini - the local broadcasting corp. I think that's the same throughout the island. The hotel staff are very curteous and speak average English.

Galle Face for some reason seems to be the favourite with the locals for weddings. For the three days I stayed there I saw three weddings happen. During these cermonies the parking lot overflows with cars. I believe there are two wedding halls and at peak times there are about 6-8 weddings per day!

The Galle Face hotel has two restaurants: THE SEA SPRAY and THE VERANDAH. Breakfast (not complimentary) is usally at the SEA SPRAY and the spread includes mostly continental fare. THE VERANDAH is open for lunch and dinner. The business centre has just one computer with internet access and is a ripp-off.

Ironing board and iron are available on request. We had trouble getting one and the bell boy gave us the same excuse for three days! I wonder if there is really an ironing board and iron.

Raja BojunBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Raja Bojun, meaning Kings Feast in Sanskrit and other Asian languages. The restaurant lives up to its name. We were there for lunch on our first day in Colombo. The spread consists of mostly Sinhala food, three or four varieties of thick rice (coloured) with assorted gravies, lots of seafood, some chicken dishes and the usual desserts. I particularly liked the coconut Sambol; it's fiery like most Sri Lankan food.

The restaurant is in the heart of the business district. We found a lot of business people having lunch. Floor to ceiling glass enclosures allow you to watch the sea while you eat. There is an occassional rumbling from the local train passing by.

Lotus LeafBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

An average restaurant serving local sinhalese cuisine. Buffet, but you can only choose the dishes. The plate is filled by the waiter. Dishes are kept in earthen pots to give it authenticity. Go to the airconditioned hall on the first floor. Live Indian Classical music at times.

Pizza HutBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Well, pizza has its origins in Italy, but since Pizza Hut has its origins in the US, I chose American for the type of cuisine. I am sure every one of us has been to a Pizza Hut. Standard fare that you find in most Pizza Huts all over the world. Mostly college kids around.

Restaurant

When you are tired after a bout of shopping at Odel, head for Deli France on the ground floor. Great breads. You can choose between Italian and the French baguettes. Pepper Chicken on the sandwich is great. Good Coffee.

Restaurant | "Verandah, The"

The Verandah is open during lunch and dinner. We had dinner in the open air with the sea breeze lashing at us while I downed my scotch and my collegue had his rum. Dishes are standard continental fare.

The Cricket ClubBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

A theme pub probably started off by a cricket enthusiast. It has cocktails named after fielding positions in the game. Good drinks, especially the scotch. Has a lot of cricket memorabilia - autographed bats, photographs of players, clothing etc. You can buy souvenirs like mugs and T-shirts. Even if you don't like the game you'd like the pub.

Clancy'sBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

An Irish pub to the core, they serve both 'Whiskey' (Irish) and 'Whisky' (Scotch) with a live band playing after 9:30 pm. The deviled chicken is fiery. If you are not used to spicy food ask the waiter to tone down the spice in your dish.

A nice place to relax and spend the evening (when the band is not playing). It gets very crowded after 9pm.

Clancy's
Colombo, Sri Lanka

Great restaurant, exceptional service. All dishes are from the German/Austrian region; the portions served are large. It's possible that a single dish can be shared by two people. So order in moderation. The restaurant has an exclusive veg menu. Interiors are dimly lit with wooden panels all around.

Wow, great shopping experience. Excellent candles, aromatic oils, hand made soaps, face packs, clothes (bermudas, T-shirts) etc. Avoid the cutlery (go to Lanka Ceramics) and Tea (buy it from Keels or any other local shops).

Arts and Antiques ShoppingBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Barefoot"

This is one hell of a shop. The silk scarfs and shawls are exceptionally good. Barefoot preserves the local traditions like the prints found in the regions of Trincomalee etc. Wooden door stoppers, table mats, palm leaves, items made of coconut wood, cocktails mats etc, etc.. Simply Irresistable.

Lanka CeramicsBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

If you love ceramics this is the place. When we reached there, the shop was closing, but the staff took the trouble of keeping it open for us. There are coffee mugs, tea sets, dinner sets made of bone china, stone etc. The dinner sets are grand and fit to feed a king. You would also find floor tiles, bathroom and swimming pool tiles on sale. My next trip to colombo would be devoted exclusively to Lanka Ceramics.

Keells SupermarketBest of IgoUgo

Attraction | "Keels Super market"

If you would like to buy tea, then you should buy what the locals drink. This is the place to buy it. Buy as much tea as possible because this is the cheapest place to buy it. I picked up 1 kilo of tea (500 grams of Lipton and 500 grams of Ceylonta) at an average of about 100 Srilankan Rupees. Other exotic teas from the house of Dilma and Melsna are also available. Choose the gift pack from Dilma; it has a sample of teas from various regions of Srilanka including the high altitude teas, which are considered the champagne of all teas.

Avoid buying liquor as it is expensive inside Colombo. Better buy it in the duty free shop at the airport.
