Finding new things to do in a place that you live can sometimes seem like a chore. I opted to stay in most nights and watch a little pirated cable, but when my cousin, Matt's , favorite punk band was playing downtown I had to go along. I also like to find new places to eat. San Jose is full of unique resaurants from Peruvian to barbeque. While I lived in San Jose, I worked on the construction of The Tech Museum of Innovation. This million+ museum has some of the most incredible interactive exhibits for all ages. I think it was the best interactive museum around until the EMP in Seattle came along. And it should be, Silicon Valley is the worlds heartbeat of electronics. ...Read More

The Fairmont San Jose

Hotel | "The Faimont"

Quote:
I attended a graduation banquet here, it is by far the ritziest place in town. Many of my friends chose to get a room there the night of the event, I did not. I think the price may have been over $100 and, no doubt, it has gone up since.

The Fairmont is situated overlooking the Cesar Chavez park at market and San Carlos Streets. Across from there is the eyesore known as The Tech. If you can handle the Mango and blue dayglow that adorns The Tech get a room with a view.

The inside of this small chain of resaurants is something between a whore house and a train depot as far as ambience. The portions are huge,so don't fill up on bread. It's a fun experience for families or for a date.

Sandwiches, nothing special. I have a story though. One day I met my wife in here for lunch, I was working around the corner at The Tech. They have a nice little patio area for dining. I grew up in a small town 200 miles south of San Jose and graduated high school there. About 4 years after that is when this story happened. 'Larry! Is that you?' I asked the dude in the hippy shirt. 'Isaac! What the hell are you doing here?' He replied with the same amazement. I graduated with Larry. We were aquainted socially, but weren't great friends. OK, we dyed our hair together once. It was totally off the wall to run into him in downtown San Jose. The only oth...Read More

Henry's World Famous Hi - Life

Restaurant | "Henry's Hi Life"

Get there early because there is usually a wait for this legendary barbeque joint. Have a drink in the bar while you wait to be seated in the dim dining room. The baked potatoes (standard side dish) are huge Idahoans. ASk for the cholesteral ball, a mass of sour cream, butter and other bad things that taste so good. The baseball size dolop looks orange in the dim light, I don't know what gives it that hue, but it's good. Save room for your entre, steak or ribs that you can watch get grilled from your seat on the open oak pit. Don't miss out on a bit of the Hi life. You'll find it over by the arena, it's not a very hi profile place, and the dead ends and one way streets c...Read More

Johnny Rockets

Restaurant

Quote:
Johnny Rockets can be found all over the world, so I don't suppose it's new to most people. If it is new to you, you will seat yourself at a table or the bar in the fifties style diner. In some of these places you get singing waitstaff, but not in San Jose. Instead, you get nickel jukeboxes that hardly operate.

Try a malt, slice of pie, the fries are great and the burgers are delicious. They also have a dangerous chili bowl that is good for those with iron guts.

Johnny Rockets is around the corner from movie theatres and the park is a block away.

There is also a location in Campbell, in the Pruneyard Shopping Center.

OK Chinese

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
The name says it all, this is okay Chinese food (read: doesn't suck). While the food is run of the mill, the price is something to get excited about. OK Chinese boasts 3 items for $3. That's right, $1 per item. Choose from your favorite Chinese dishes and watch as they are slapped into your styrofoam tray. You will go home with leftovers for $3. In town you will find others that try to copy this method of marketing like One Dollar Chinese, but none come close to being OK.

I worked on the construction of the $90 million+ building. It is completely state of the art. The building is three stories high with an open breezeway in the center so you can look all the way up (or down). Exhibits like mars rover, a remote control submarine and video editing can be found in the basement. On the ground floor is located the gift shop and cafe along with the ticket window for the IMAX theater. Next to the entrance is a huge reception hall used for fund raisers and banquets (President Clinton visited during the last phases of construction to help raise money). On the top floor exhibits like virtual wheel chair races and computer designed bicycles await creative minds. Also ...Read More

Usual Nightclub

When The Usual isn't pimping itself out as a dance club they get some pretty good local acts to play. Weekends are normal for live shows, but sometimes during the week one will show itself off.

If you have a chance catch Curbside or Sketch for a bit of local punk.

Winchester Mystery House

In the entire time that I lived in San Jose, I never went to the Winchester House. It was only five minutes from my house, too. I did, however, go when I was a kid with my parents. I remember that it was not all that I expected. Yes, doors went to nowhere and stairs too. I didn't really comprehend why Mrs. Winchester, of the rifle fame, had built the house the way that she had. Apparently, she was obeying the spirits that lived with her. They would tell her to start building stairs in one place and then redirect her attention in another part of the house. They hold special night time tours that I think would be the way to go now. They only do them around Halloween, though. Construction never st...Read More
