Taking the Kids to Ohio

An August 2002 trip to Sandusky by Jackie V

We stayed in Sandusky, Ohio while visiting family. Of course, no trip to Sandusky would be complete without a visit to Cedar Point amusement park. We also had a chance to explore Cleveland and Detroit.

Great Bear Lodge is a wonderful place to stay in Sandusky with a huge indoor waterpark. Cedar Point amusement park provides plenty of fun for everyone. The Great Lakes Science Center in Cleveland was outstanding with hundreds of hands on exhibits. The best place we found for dining was Margaritaville - a bit off the beaten path, but the food was well worth it.

Quick Tips:

You can buy your Cedar Point tickets at the Meijer's grocery store for off per ticket, and then you don't have to wait in line at the gate.

Best Way To Get Around:

You really need a car to enjoy the area.

Hotel | "Great Bear Lodge"

This is a new resort with a huge indoor waterpark. We stayed in a family cabin which had a separate area for the kids. The kids' cabin had a set of bunkbeds, another single bed, a TV/VCR, and desk. There was also a mini fridge, microwave, and coffee maker in the room. Everything in the hotel was spotless. The woodsy decor was very appealing. Of course, the highlight of the resort is the waterpark. There were four watersldes, a lazy river, 2 hot tubs, and various other water play areas. Every few minutes, a huge bucket at the top of the ceiling would fill up and then drop the water over kids waiting for a splash. What fun! There were 2 restaurants on site, but we did not eat in them. Overall, we were very pleased with our stay here. It was pricier than what we are used to, but worth the money for a splurge.

Attraction

We went to Cedar Point the Thursday before Labor Day, and it was not crowded. We spent very little time waiting for any of the rides. We thought the best overall coaster was the Gemini, not too jerky or too wicked! If you don't like roller coasters, Cedar Point isn't for you. We had to buy an adult ticket for my 6 year old, because he is over 48 inches tall. Although he met the height limits for many of the coasters, he was too afraid to ride them. Yet, he was too big for the kiddie rides, so there was not much for him to enjoy.

This is a very popular museum overlooking the lake in Cleveland. We were a bit annoyed when we had to wait in line for 40 minutes to get our tickets. If you plan to go on a weekend, you might want to order the tickets through Ticketstar ahead of time to avoid the wait.

Once we got inside the museum, it did not seem crowded. There were hundreds of interesting exhibits to explore. You could easily spend most of a day at the museum. Our kids loved it. The omnimax theater was also very nice.
