A travel journal to Hilton Head by Gerry May

Quote: People flock to Hilton Head Island for the sun and the beach, for the biking and the golf. But with all of this outdoor activity, a person can’t help but build up an appetite. This journal will feature our personal reviews of restaurants we have visited on Hilton Head Island.

Dining Around Hilton Head

Overview

Quote:
On Hilton Head Island there is certainly no lack of opportunities to quench your appetite. From fast food to unique gourmet, the island has something for everyone’s taste. Whether you savor a quiet table for two with a sunset view or room for a large party with young children, you will find it here. During many years of visits to Hilton Head, we have managed to sample many of the restaurants on Hilton Head. We try to get to one or two new restaurants on each visit. The restaurant reviews in this journal are based on our experience and therefore do not reflect the views of a professional food critic. Hopefully our insight will be of assistance in your search for good eats on Hilton Head Island...Read More

Alligator Grille Seafood Restaurant & Sushi

Restaurant | "Alligator Grille & Seafood Restaurant"

Quote:
Alligator Grille is a medium sized sefood restaurant tucked away in the back of Coligny Plaza. There is an outside patio and three medium sized rooms inside. The restaurant does not feel big, but we have been comfortable the several times we have been here. We went early on a Saturday night in late Auguust (2002) and got in without a reservation. However, it looks like a reservation would be a good idea at most times, especially with a large group. This is a great place for creativly prepared seafood. On our last visit, I had broiled Seafood Trio ($19.95) with shrimp, scallops, and deviled crab cake. It was simply prepared and very tasty. The seafood was a generous portion and appeared to...Read More

Iron Wolf Chop House

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
The Iron Wolf Chop House is a new (2002) resaturant located in the Village at Wexford on Highway 278. It has the somewhat dark, but handsome, feel of an upscale chop house. We were seated in the room off the bar, but there were other rooms that we did not see. Our seating was roomy, with an uncrowded feel. Although any restaurant at the beach will have children, this restaurant felt like more of an adult atmosphere. The menu is extensive, with a large variety of grilled items (steaks, chops, etc) along with a nice variety of seafood, chicken and pasta. We both decided to try the steak entrees. Unlike many other restaurants on Hilton Head, Iron Wolf includes salad, vegetable and a s...Read More

Sea Shack

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
The Sea Shack is not listed in any of the touristy restaurant guidebooks. The ad in the "Yellow Pages" says "Not fancy, just good." "Not fancy" is probably an understatement for the Sea Shack. Located off Pope Ave, near the Hofbrauhaus, the Sea Shack looks more like a seafood store than a restaurant. There are about a dozen tables along the wall and a counter where you place your order and get your soft drinks. (Limited beer and wine selections are also available.) The menu, listed on the wall, consists mostly of a variety of fried and broiled seafood, along with sides such as cole slaw and fries.. After you place your order, the food is brought to your table on paper plates. The staff wa...Read More

Sage Room Restaurant Bar

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
The Sage Room (new in 2002) is a nice addition to the upscale restaurants on the island. The prices are reasonable for the quality of food and the presentation. The Sage Room is a rather small restaurant that appears to be popular, so make a reservation. It was full on our Friday night visit with many apparent locals in attendance. As you enter you will notice a large counter where some patrons can enjoy their meal as they watch the chefs at work in the open kitchen. We were not asked about sitting at the counter, so I don't know how that is arranged. I would not recommend that for a large party because conversation would be awkward. We sat at a traditional table. The menu is no...Read More

Redfish

Best Of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
Redfish is a relatively new restaurant as of 2002 that has already become quite popular. It is a modern, attractive restaurant in a stand-alone building. Connected to the restsaurant is a wine and gift store. The wine store connection provides for an exceptionally long wine list at the restaurant. Some of the tables appeared to be in the store section, which looked like a non-private place to dine. The main dining room has more traditional seating arrangements. The menu is mostly seafood, with some steaks and other items. Some of the entrees reflect a Cuban emphasis, but nothing we encountered was overly spicy. Our meals were nicely prepared with obviously fresh ingredients. We ...Read More
