Paradise in Central California

An August 2000 trip to Morro Bay by kelley

Natural beauty is the name of the game. I found this place to be a nice place to collect my thoughts, breath in fresh air, and chat with the locals.

My best friend Nicole and I decided to get away, a 'girls trip.' The only place we could find a campsite along the southern coast of California was in Los Osos. The actual campground is located in Montana de Oros State Park. As we arrived at the park we were amazed with the beauty of rocky cliffs on our right and bunches of Eucalyptus trees on our left. We settled in and decided to go on a walk (there are plenty of trails to explore here.) Los Osos is just south of Morro Bay. The five mile stretch of coastline is actually a bird estuary. The views were breath taking. Hundreds of seagulls, cranes, and pelicans gathering on rocks or flying in formations through the sky meant that I used a roll of film within minutes. The next day we decided to explore the estuary and rented kayaks up in Morro Bay. Not only were we mesmerized by the diving pelicans but there were a few sea lions that held our attention for a while as they bobbed and dove just a few feet from us.

Quick Tips:

If you find that the mornings are too cold to stay in your tent, just as we did, then you must go to The Rock Espresso Bar on Morro Bay Blvd. and buy a warm drink and a fresh made muffin from Dave. He'll tell you all you want to know about the place if you have questions.

The campsite is small, there are probaly about 50 spaces. They also have seperate sights for campers with horses and campers. The sight itself is set in a little niche at the base of a mountain. There are beautiful Eucalyptus trees surrounding and the beach is only a five minute walk, if that. It is a perfect sight EXCEPT that there is no running water, which means no showers. But the restrooms are nice. They are kept clean and always smell of room freshener.

This is a wonderful little coffeehouse walking distance to the harbor. Dave and Shauna are the owners and seem to know everyone who walks through the door. They are very proud of their garden in the back. It's a great place to grab a cup of coffee, nosh on a muffin or bagel and read the newspaper in the morning.
