Zoo

Attraction | "Zoo of Antwerp"

Zoo Photo, Antwerp, Belgium

This zoo is more then just about animals. Previous the zoo was founded in 1843 as a private park for the happy few and the rich. Soon it grew bigger and all people could enter without being a member. Whereas it started as a collection of exotic animals, it grew to the research and prevalation of animal species. During Winter season you can have a guided visit in group behind the cages of the zoo and see how animals are cared for, learn about their breeding program etc. In other seasons you can walk around the zoo, enjoy not only the animals but all the art that you can find on this little spot: architecture in all kinds of sorts, landscape architecture, paintings, sculptures... The interior is magnificient. In this house, famous humanists dwelled around. Vesalius was one of them. It was also a dangerous time for the Spanish were here to chase every one out that was not catolic! All protestants and other religions were expelled, some books were banned.

Very secretly however the Moretus family did print so called "anti-catholic" pamphlets or papers. It was a hard time to survive in the way of not getting caught, imprisoned or worse: executed.

Attraction | "Plantin Moretus Museum: rich interior"

Museum Plantin-Moretus/Pretenkabinet Photo, Antwerp, Belgium

As told in a previous entry, the interior is very rich. The walls are covered with Green tapisery of Oudenaerde (very famous!) or with Spanish or Mechelen's (Malines) leather. This was the way they tried to cover up the walls in 16th and 17th century Antwerp. Of course only the rich could do so! The furniture consisted out of real Dutch drawings and china from Delft. In the living room, there is a beautiful clavecimble. The inside of the cover is painted by Rubens.
