Quote: Ballarat is an impressive pleasant city west of Melbourne. This area came to prominence in the 1850's with the discovery of gold. It was the largest goldstrike anyone had ever known. It's for this reason that this area played a key part in Australia's history.

Day at Sovereign Hill

Overview

Quote:
Sovereign Hill is worth spending a good part of your day at. In fact that was all we did. Make sure to take the mine tour, it's worth the extra few dollars. I would have liked to visit the Eureka Stockade and the Gold Museum. Also the city looked like it would be interesting in it's own right.

Quick Tips:

Check out http://www.sovereignhill.com.au This website will not only tell you all about sovereign hill, but also the Eureka Stockade, and the city itself.

Best Way To Get Around:

Driving yourself works well. However you can get here by train from Melbourne cheaply. Around . Tourist shuttles will drive you from the station out to Sovereign Hill and the Eureka Stockade.

Situated in the dining room of the "United States Hotel", this restaurant often provides a pleasant and quiet place to eat your lunch or dinner while visiting Sovereign Hill. The dining room is fairly elegant with nice wine glasses and quality china. There's a fire place and period paintings on the wall. The service is excellent. It seems to serve the same food as the busier "New York Bakery" just down the street. Same prices too. The difference with this place being its nicer dining room and the fact that it's licensed. The food is of good quality. Your more traditional Australian fare. Nothing too exotic. Certainly above average and pleasant, particularly in its given environment. ...Read More

Sovereign Hill recreates a gold mining town on the site of some the richest goldfields ever discovered. The gold rush played a key part in Australian history and thus many Australians like to come here to experience a bit of their past. As a foreigner, much of the historical significance was lost on me but I still found the place great fun as well as interesting. There are some seventy buildings modeled after those that lined the streets of Ballarat in the 1850's. And they are run and operated by staff in period costume. I've never seen a recreated town of this magnitude. And they pull it off so well. It really is great fun. Worth making a point ot visit is the Empire Bowling ...Read More

After the intial strikes started to become mined out, skilled miners who'd come from Ireland and Cornwall realized that the quartz deposits that they were seeing indicated that there was still gold to be found undergournd. They were right and deep mines like this one were build. Sovereign Hill is built around this mine site and to tour it is easily the best part of the day. Well worth the extra few dollars. The tour takes you into the mine where you will see the cages that the miners would descend down into and ascend up out of the mines in. You'll see work stations, break areas, etc. all the while learning a lot about what life in the mines is like from the knowledgable and energetic g...Read More
