Overview

Maui represents the best of the Hawaiian Islands. Glistening sand lines the isle's perimeter. Humpback whales swim across its shores. Stars shine brighter here than anywhere in the mainland United States. And a sweet scent of sugarcane fills the air.

The perfect way to experience Maui is not only to relax on the beach, but to embrace your sense of adventure. Hike through rainforests and visit hidden waterfalls. Take a leisurely road trip to Hana on the island's eastern tip. And be sure to bike down the volcano.

This journal focuses on West Maui, specifically Old Lahaina Town and Kaanapali Beach. I have also included information about a day-trip to Haleakala National Park.

Quick Tips:

Best Way To Get Around:

Your Maui adventure begins as you land at Kahului Airport. Rent a car and drive along the Hono a Pi'ilani Highway (Highway 31) toward Lahaina. It's a scenic drive with views of the ocean and the West Maui Mountains. With your rental car, you'll be able to explore the entire island.

Kimo's RestaurantBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Kimo's"

Dining options abound in Lahaina, a historic whaling town located minutes from Kaanapali. Kimo's on bustling Front Street is the spot for freshly caught Hawaiian fish. Ono, Ahi and Mahi-Mahi are just a few of the seafood selections. Prime rib and Polynesian chicken are also excellent choices. You may have to wait a long time for a table at Kimo's, but don't fret. Enjoy a cocktail in the bar area, and watch the waves crash onto the shore. Dine during sunset for spectacular oceanfront views of the islands of Lanai and Molokai. At the end of your meal, savor the restaurant's signature dessert -- Hula Pie. It's a gargantuan slice of chocolate pie topped with macadamia nut ice cream and fudge. Yum.

Leilani's on the Beach: Whalers VillageBest of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "Happy Hour at Leilani's Beachside Grill"

Whaler's Village, an open-air shopping center located in Kaanapali, boasts some impressive beachfront restaurants and bars. One of the best is Leilani's On the Beach, where happy hour features live music and half-price tropical drinks. Try the Lava-Flow Daquiri, a delicious rum concoction topped with fresh strawberries and whipped cream. Beer connoisseurs can sample the local brew -- Kona Longboard Lager. Feast on grilled burgers and chicken sandwiches downstairs at the bar. Of if you're craving more upscale cuisine, head upstairs to the dining room.

Under the Maui SeaBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Some of the best snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean can be found off the coast of Maui. Black Rock along Kaanapali Beach is the perfect spot to ogle sea life. Rent your gear at Snorkel Bob's, 161 Lahainaluna Road in Lahaina. You can score a mask, snorkel and fins for $29 a week, far less than the $15 hourly rate you would've paid to rent at a hotel. Keep your eyes peeled for grey fish with rainbow-colored stripes. These are Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, the state fish of Hawaii. If you're lucky, you may even spot some sea turtles.

Haleakala DownhillBest of IgoUgo

Attraction

Hawaiian for "House of the Sun," Haleakala is Maui's famous volcano. It also boasts the steepest paved road on Earth. Mountain Riders offers guided biking excursions down Haleakala. They'll pick you up at your hotel in a big red van and drive you up to the summit. There, you'll hop on a bike and coast your way downhill for 38 miles all the way to the beach at Pa'ia. The elevation is pretty high, so be prepared for chilly temperatures at the top. You can shed clothing along the way as it gets warmer. For more info, check out Mountain Riders
