"New Zealand: A Biker's Heaven"

A February 2002 trip to Middlemarch by estoloff

New Zealand is said by many to be a biker's paradise. Weighed down by a backpack, and without a “push bike”, I wanted to join the thousands of bikers experiencing the fresh air, and beautiful, pristine landscapes. The Central Otago Rail Trail makes this possible for any traveler.

Hoping on the Taieri Gorge Railway for a ride on a steamer train.

Spending a night or two with Peter at Peter's Farm Hostel in Waipata. Peter is the most generous hostel owner; he lends out his kayak and horse to guests, at no cost.

Ending the trip in Clyde and feasting on a gourmet meal.

Quick Tips:

Make sure to rent a bike with front shock absorbers, and comfortable handle bars.

Pack light.

Grab the Taieri Gorge Railway in Dunedin, and store your bike on the train. Depart the train at the end of the line, and bike to Middlemarch.

If you're not in great shape, the first day will be difficult. Take the second day off and rest your sore muscles -- it will make the next few days that much easier.
