Spoleto: High-Hilled City

A July 2002 trip to Spoleto by prego25

Sure, it sounds like a dress shoe, but Umbrian Spoleto is one of the most beautiful, overlooked Italian cities.

The former capital of an influencial Lombard duchy, Spoleto is now renowned for its annual International Arts Festival; but the city, teeming with musicians and cultural- savvy travelers during early July, settles back into its pre-festival self soon after. This is the Spoleto I called home for four weeks, the Spoleto I love. There is so much to extoll: the streets, the food, the light, the gradual slope upwards to the Rocca dei Papi, which offers an excellent view of the Ponte delle Torri and the tree-lined hills. The castle is not to be missed. Nothing is to be missed.
