Overview

Swaziland has many interesting places to visit. If Casinos are your interest you can go to Piggs Peak 32 miles south of the northern border with South Africa on the R570. Or (like me) if you prefer the more 'bush' experiece turn east on the dirt road off of R570 at Piggs Peak and go for 40 miles. You will be amongst the most beautiful Bushman paintings and tribal villages. The people are friendly and welcoming to travelers. Some of the best carved rock art shopping can be done on the main road R570 on the West Side of the country. Quick Tips: The main roads through Swaziland are tarred and safe. Although all backcountry roads are dirt and very rough. I am not aware of any public transportati...Read More

Timbali Park is situated on the old Mbabane/Manzini road, about a kilometre from the new highway. From Mbabane, take the 'Ezulwini' exit from the highway, about 9 km from the town, then follow the old main road for about 1 km, then turn right, following the signs to our entrance. From Manzini, the first 'Ezulwini' exit road from the highway meets the old main road directly opposite Timbali Park.

Hlane, Swazilands largest protected area, is home to the largest herds of game in Swaziland. Lions, elephants and white rhino are often seen, and the bird life is outstanding. I have never seen so many buzzards... You can camp in the game park at Ndlovu Camp and stay in cabins at Bhubesi Camp .

Story/Tip

The Kingdom of Swaziland is a very traditional country. My last journey through Swaziland took me from the northern border of South Africa through Mbabane and then west back into South Africa. Unfortunately for me my fuel pump was leaking from damage sustained the week before in Mozambique. I had to pull over constantly to attempt to patch the fuel leak. I wasn't able to find any auto parts store so my whole journey was slightly stressful. There is great shopping along the R570 and you can buy beautiful hand carved rock art from the many vendors along the side of the road (they will also trade clothing for their work). Swaziland's landscape consists of low mountains dotted with trees and vill...Read More
