Scenic Cape Breton Island Best of IgoUgo

Overview

Quote:
Cape Breton is a place I have returned to, year after year. My family originated in this region of Canada before moving west into Ontario to reside. As a kid, I would come with my parents and spend my summers here with my cousins, aunts and uncles. Now, as a grown man, I continue to come with a family of my own. The scenery is simply unbelievable. I brought my camera with me whenever I left the house and took pictures on most of these trips. The Cabot Trail, which was definitely the highlight of my trip, is rated as one of the best driving routes in the world. Cape Breton also has an abundance of great beaches. Many of which are very secluded. They are ideal for exploring an...Read More

Bingo isn’t exactly my game but I have to admit that the prizes up for grabs make this game very enticing. Jackpots can be as much as $2000. My younger brother was lucky enough to win $250. He quickly invested his winnings into an X-box video game system. Each little village has one night a week designated as Bingo night. Bingo is scheduled on Tuesday night at the Port Hood arena. Judique has a bingo night on Mondays. On Wednesdays you don’t even have to leave your house because it’s T.V. bingo night. All that you have to do is call in, and you're ready to play. Bingo makes for great family entertainment. As I've never come across any age restrictions, everyone, regardless of age, can play. ...Read More

With the weather being a bit rainy, we decided to drive to Mabou, a small fishing village along the Ceilidh Trail (route 19). Just outside of the village, we came upon Glenora Inn and Distillery and decided to stop to see what it had to offer. Glenora produces North America’s only single malt whisky. It is actually Scotch whisky however, as the distillery is not located in Scotland, they are prohibited from calling their whisky Scotch. We arrived just in time for a tour. Tours leave on the hour, and are worth the $5 fee. The tour guide explains the process of making Scotch whisky while guiding you through their impressive and picturesque facility. At the end of the tour visitors are given a sam...Read More

The Cabot Trail offers one of the most unbelievable driving experiences in the world. If you are visiting Cape Breton make sure you leave a day open to experience the trail. It will be one of if not the highlight of your trip. The Cabot Trail loop stretches 300 kilometres from Margaree to Baddeck around the most northern section of Cape Breton Island. It is along this trail that the Cape Breton Highlands National Park is located. I have driven the trail from the Baddeck side before but I find that the best route is to leave from the Margaree side. Whichever way you choose, I recommend you start quite early. It will take the entire day to travel, as you will make frequent stops for photos...Read More

Story/Tip

Port Hood is one of the larger fishing villages in Inverness County. Located on the Ceillidh Trail (route 19), the village has sufficient amenities that one can find nearly everything you need for a relaxing vacation without venturing too far. It features two banks, a Co-op, some great restaurants, a full service gas station and beaches with some of the warmest waters in eastern Canada. We are fortunate enough to have family in this picturesque village that are generous enough to allow us to stay with them during our vacations. Port Hood is also the hometown of NHL great Al MacInnis, whom I have personally seen many times during the summer break. As the village is located directly on t...Read More
