Bruges2002

Overview

Quote:
Bruges has a lot to offer. So much it would take ages to write it all down. However, some things you should have seen/done: the marketplace, the old St-Janshospitaal, the lake of love, a boat tour on the canals,... Also, try to walk around in the evening, there are far less tourists then and the whole town bathes in a fairy-like light...Quick Tips: Try to get lost in the tiny streets, that's how you'll see most... Try not to spend your day by eating or shopping. Instead, walk a bit around, not only through the main (tourist) area, but go by the feel, you won't get lost...Best Way To Get Around: The best way to get around is by foot (or by bike if you're in a hurry). You can als...Read More

One of my favourite pubs in Bruges. It has a great atmosphere (live music every friday), a great setting (right in front of the townhall) and there are no loads of tourists, so you can have a nice conversation over there.

The Lake of Love is one of the most romantic places in Brugge. The legend says that if you throw a coin from the tiny bridge into the lake, you'll ...... (I think you know the rest of the legend. It's a quite common legend, cfr. the Trevi-fountain)

Canal Boat Tours

Attraction | "Boat Tour on "De Reitjes""

It's possible to take a tour on Bruges' canals ("De Reitjes" in Dutch). It takes about 30 min and it gives you quite a good view of the city. The guides are multi-lingual (Spanish, French, German, English, ...) and give good information on the various buildings along the circuit. You can start your tour at several locations: the fishmarket (Vismarkt), Rozenhoedkaai, Dijver, Wollestraat, Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk (Church of our Lady). My experience is that the one at the Fishmarket has the shortest queue.

You might not know it but Brugge is Europe's Cultural Capital this year. One of the projects is ".WAV", programming several soundscapes across the city. Several artists created a soundset for the project and their creations are set up along the canals. A recommended walking map can be bought at the Brugge2002-house (House Perez de Malvenda, on the corner of the Wollestraat and the Dijver) or at the Concertbuilding (Zand). My favourite soundscapes are the ones at the Bonifaciusbridge (between Groeninge and Gruuthuuse), the giant bamboo platform (Langerei) and the "Quatuor de becs" at The Lake of Love. The project runs till 15th September and most installations can be visited...Read More

Vlissinghe Pub

Attraction | "My favourite pubs"

Quote:
Let's start with my all-time favourite: Celtic Ireland. I don't know why but I like Irish pubs. Everytime I'm on holiday, I have a drink in an Irish Pub. And when I'm not on a holiday, I prefer to go to the Celtic Ireland. Located in front of the townhall, it offers you a great place to "cool down". The barkeepers are (often) real Irishmen, and are always up for a friendly chat. It isn't really discovered by tourists (although I've heard it's mentioned in some guidebooks) so you can have a nice conversation over there. There's live music every friday evening (starting at 22.00h) and it might get crowded then. You can also have dinner. My rating: ***** Location: Burg Next is...Read More

Belfry Tower/Belfort of Bruges

Attraction | "The Belfrey"

Belfry Tower/Belfort of Bruges Photo, Bruges, Belgium

The Marketsquare is dominated by (in my opinion) the most beautiful of Bruges. The current tower was built between 1482 and 1486. However, the first tower was destroyed by fire in 1280. All the important papers of the city were preserved in the belfrey. You can still see the treasure-house with the 7 keys... Not so many tourist know that you can climb the Belfrey. If you're not afraid of climbing 366 steps, you'll discover a great view of Brugge. And if you can't climb all the steps, you can always go to the Concertbuilding (Concertgebouw) on "Het Zand", it has a nice "terras-café" on the 7th floor AND it has an elevator. You can as well enjoy the music of the carillion (47 bells...Read More
