Quote: River Bend Nature Works is a beautiful nature reserve in Wichita Falls, Texas -- home of Midwestern State University and Sheppard Air Force Base. It is an environmental education center that includes a 4,000-square-foot pavilion: The Elizabeth Prothro Pavilion. Both the pavilion and the one-mile nature walk are handicapped-accessible. Entry is free, Monday through Friday; otherwise, you can reserve the pavillion by calling the center at 940-767-0843.

The highlights of River Bend Nature Works are the nature walk through 15 acres of beautiful wooded landscape, the butterfly garden and butterfly house, wetland habitat, pioneer garden and general store, Native American Wickiup, and much more. Trained field guides are available to assist and to educate visitors. Quick Tips: If you are planning a trip to visit the center, I suggest wearing comfortable clothes and shoes and plenty of insect repellent. Lush, green, vine-covered, berry-laden, wind-rustled, deep and interesting: these are the woods of River Bend Nature Works. The 15 acres are secluded and relaxing and yet accessible by a smooth, wide concrete path. Following a nature guide or venturing out on your own, discovering this quiet reserve is a treat. Different attractions diverge from the path: a pioneer garden and sod house, pioneer general store, Native American Wickiup, butterfly house and wetland habitat. The hike is an enchanting change of pace from city life.
