Las Vegas: R & R Is Still Alive!

A July 2002 trip to Las Vegas by mrs.doc

My husband and I expected to spend a few days sweating out the heat of summer touring "Vegas" and neighboring spots like Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, Hoover Dam, and Valley of Fire. However, immediately after arriving at Fairfield's Grand Desert Resort we completely revamped our itinerary!

Quick Tips:

Search numerous discount "Las Vegas" websites and read free publications for entertainment ideas and valuable cost-saving promotions, coupons, tickets, etc. One of our favorite resources, vegasplayer.com, provided a good schedule of everything from hotel websites to buffet meal availability, prices and serving times throughout the city. Let your fingers do the walking FREE!

High rise tower overlooking the city also provided a beautiful view of the airport and mountains. The king size bed and other room amenities were comfortable, nicely decorated although I expected more for the price we paid. Our room was located at the FAR END from the elevator which only added to our disappointment that the ice machines didn't work on our floor and multiple floors above and beneath us. In fact, this is by far the longest indoor walk I've ever endured to get to a hotel room. I mention that only because anyone with a disability should definitely ask for a room close to the elevators. We purchased EFX show tickets in the MGM lobby and were pleasantly surprised to learn EFX offers a 50% discount to all firefighters post-9/11. Full action casino gaming and entertainment. We didn't visit the night scene lounge although it was quite popular for those who enjoy that scene.

Best Things Nearby:
Hard Rock Hotel/Casino within walking distance. Free shuttle to/from other casinos, including those on the strip.

Best Things About the Resort:
Posh, luxurious gold crown resort, no casino on premise, excellent customer service from both the front desk and concierge, free parking, we were pleasantly surprised to be allowed to check in early when inquiring about where we might store our luggage until check-in time, washer/dryer in room with an initial supply of laundry soap was very convenient.

Resort Experience:
One of the best resorts we've ever visited. We felt so pampered by the expansive decor and amenities that we modified our vacation itinerary to spend a couple of days just lounging at the resort. Easy to do with a huge pool outdoors and freshly drawn jacuzzi whirlpool bath indoors at your beckon or whim!

Easy parking, day or night. Large rooms, elaborately decorated, jacuzzi tub for 2 located between master bedroom and bath. Difficult choices: take a nap, watch TV/videos, lounge in the jacuzzi tub, or go to the pool! Glamorous, comfortable and luxurious resort. No casino on premises made for a quiet retreat after visiting many noisy casinos on and off the strip. Concierge gave us discount tickets to afternoon shows which were very enjoyable. We don't have small children but noticed there were many planned activities for this age group.

Restaurant | "RIO Hotel All-You-Can-Eat Buffet"

Voted the best buffet in Las Vegas and we can see why. Mixed cuisines including mexican, oriental, sushi, italian, boiled shrimp (our favorite) and seafood, shakes/burgers and salads. An all-you-can-eat, self service, indulgent atmosphere. Once lunch or dinner is complete, visit the mixed bakery where fresh homebaked goods tempt: cannoli, creme and fresh fruit cups, bavarian creme pastries, cookies, cakes and pies. Soft serve ice cream was a nice, plain side to compliment so many rich desserts following a huge meal of so many good foods of seemingly unending choices.
