Exploring Montrose Best of IgoUgo

Overview

Caledonian Railway Photo - Montrose, Colorado
Quote:
The town is best visited for the day or as a stopover to the bigger cities in the north east, do the historical stuuf such as the steam railway and the House of Dun

Quick Tips:

Combine this with visits to other areas of Scotland - theres not enough to keep you here for long.

Best Way To Get Around:

Best to have your own transport although public transport is available and hitching is possible but can take a while

Rated as three star by the tourist board this privately run hotel is situated right in the centre of town and is popular with the locals – which is a recommendation in itself, as well as the restaurant menu they also do lighter bar meals which are served throughout the day. Room prices are about £38 for a single room and £24pp in a double room and although Ive never stayed there overnight I guess by the rest of the décor that they’ll be fine.

2 nice flats are available in the house, each sleeping four persons on a self catering basis, with prices per week of £230 - £360 these are a really well priced option if you have transport and want to spend the time in the area or want somewhere that will be quiet in the evenings. Unfortunately you don’t stay in the house itself as its open to visitors as a tourist attraction but the flats are in the stable block, which also means that you might run into the odd bus load of people arriving during the day. contact the National Trust For Scotland for a brochure. The flats have a three star rating by the tourist board.

Roos Leap Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
With an emphasis on fresh produce Roos Leap started off a few years back specialising in Australian flavours and styles, since then it has added Mexican and pasta, chargrilled Angus (local) steak and burgers, fresh seafood, home made sweets and coffee by Starbucks. Although it retreated from the Australian emphasis much of the original menu still remains so makes for a good night out.

House Of Dun Best of IgoUgo

Attraction

House Of Dun Photo - House Of Dun, Montrose, Colorado
Quote:
A Georgian House overlooking the tidal basin, designed by William Adam and built in 1730 for Lord Dun it contains a number of original momentos of his family and is tastefully furnished throughout to reflect its life. Now owned and managed by the National Trust For Scotland it also includes extensive grounds which were planted to regain the original feel of the landscape. Some of the furniture at first glance in the house looks a bit shabby but the guides say that’s because it was hand made and they want to keep the original construction rather than restore it and hide the techniques that were used. Although very pretty décor including dinner table and the like it does suffer a bit from the usual plet...Read More

A four mile long stretch of the Kinnaber to Brechin railway line has been rebuilt, with stations at Brechin and Bridge of Dun (Near the House of Dun). This very small fragment of history is brought to life by the steam trains which plie the line and the historical exhibits housed at Brechin. For anyone that’s a fan of steam trains from their youth or have wanted to know what its like to board a reliable train service then its worth a visit. When I was last there they were doing joint tickets with the House of Dun 01561 377760

Born in 1893 he is Montrose town’s most famous artist, He sculpted the Queen and Princess Margaret as children. The studio was designed by Lamb himself and has been preserved as if he were still working there, giving visitors an almost eerie feeling as if time has stood still but a good insight into the activities of an artist. The studio only opens in the afternoons in summer, any other time by appointment 01674 673232

The western end away from the town has a huge variety of life with zones of saltmarsh, reedbed, brackish and fresh water giving rise to many habitats. The visitors centre is open during the summer months and has limited opening during winter

Introduction Best of IgoUgo

Story/Tip

Quote:
Montrose is a friendly little town sitting to the north-east of Dundee on a peninsula between a tidal basin and the north sea. The steeple of the parish church pinpoints the town from all around. Popular for short summer visits the town boasts a few interesting tourist sights and a good selection of eating establishments. Outwith the town there are numerous golf courses and readily available countryside to explore. Montrose town itself is a long established market town for the rich agricultural hinterland, as a Royal Burgh – this proud town lives a heritage of a more prosperous time when it was a busy seaport, the port today has little resemblance to its bygone days and now acts as a small base for ...Read More

Getting There

Montrose is an easy hop from Dundee, the nearest main city. Trains regularly pass via Dundee through to Aberdeen City from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, also express bus services to Aberdeen call in – but less frequently. Local bus services also ply between Montrose and the towns of Forfar and Arbroath. By car its about 40 miles from Dundee, following signs for Aberdeen, takes about 50 minutes. Same time from Aberdeen if coming southwards via Stonehaven.
