Sightseeing in Williamsburg

A July 2002 trip to Williamsburg by RobertBonnie

We had been to Willaimsburg previously with children and decided to go make this an adult trip. We are both into history and wanted to take our time picking up the local flavor. If you are into history this is a must.

We spent a day in Williamsburg visiting the shops and taking the time to talk to the shopkeepers and other period people who wander the streets of Historical Williamsburg. The Wig Maker was wonderful as were many of the other craftspeople. Take the time to ask them about how long it has taken them to learn this trade or why they work at Williamsburg and you will hear some facinating stories. The nighttime activities are wonderful, especially the ghost tales. The longer tours that give you the history of the building and the people who lived there are very worthwhile. Do not miss the Carter Plantation or the Fort at that location. With the right package this is included with your admission to Colonial Williamsburg.

Quick Tips:

We purchased the Freedom Pass which was good for a year. By attending late in the season (August) one year and early in the season the next year (July) we were able to use our admission in two visits. This made our visit very reasonable.

Best Way To Get Around:

You will do a lot of walking. Be sure to take comfortable shoes. It can be very hot in the summer. We took water bottles on a neck strap and we had numerous people ask where we bought them. The water came in handy waiting in line as refreshments are not always readily available. You will need a car to get from place to place unless you plan to visit only Colonial Williamsburg.
This timeshare has a number of units and is currently adding more. We stayed in a newer 2 bedroom unit that was well equipped. The beds were arranged so that twin beds were in the master bedroom off the large bath and a queen bed was in the smaller room. This may be good if you are traveling with kids, but not great for couples. The construction is not as good as some time shares we have stayed in and the unit was noisy. The fitness center was in poor shape and we were told this will be modfied in the future. The location is very convenient to day activities. There were patios and outdoor grills available. We liked the unit overall, but were concerned about long term upkeep based on what we saw. There were two pools (indoor and outdoor) and a whirlpool. However, they were very full due to the amount of guests and we were told more pools were to be added in the future.

This was recommended by locals and was wonderful. They had great seafood (clam chowder and hush puppies that were homemade), the shrimp in the shrimp cocktail were large, and the key lime pie was great. These items were recommended by the locals. There were several family groups and the waitstaff was quick.

This is a fun place to go for breakfast or lunch. It is located in an old house that includes an electic gift shop. There are antiques and modern items. It is packed full and if you do not make reservations, you can spend your time browsing through the various rooms of the gift shop. The food is Southern. The have Brunswick Stew, Biscuits and Ham, Pies, etc. This appears to be a popular place with the locals and you must be prepared to wait if you do not call ahead.

If you like Japanese food, this is a great place. They have a full sushi bar and their sushi was excellent. You can have your food prepared at the table or sit at regular tables. They have a variety of selections and the service was very good. This restaurant was located further out in a mall and is not someplace you might try, but it is worth the drive.
