At the northeastern corner of Trafalgar’s square stands church of St. Martin-in-the fields
. The first church on this site was built outside of the city perimeters in the 13th century, between Westminster and the City (hence, "in the fields"). The present building was completed in 1726.
The church is famous for its free lunchtime concerts at 13:05 on Monday, Tuesday and Friday,; there are also inexpensive evening concerts.
St. Martin-in-the-fields has a fine café in the roomy crypt accessible via steps on the southern side.
