Two distinct points during the trip come to mind, and the are directly related to the weather.
The coldest part of this Russian winter was shortly after I arrived in January, and it dropped well below minus 20 Celsius. My colleague, one of our Russian counterparts, and I decided to go ice skating in Gorky park in the middle of the night. The paths of the park, once walkways for carnival-goers, were now flooded and plowed, and actually smooth enough to skate on. I for sure wasn't in Kansas anymore.
