Montserrat - Home of the Black Madonna

A September 1999 trip to Montserrat by superpurd

The point of interest is the Monastery which houses the "Black Madonna" There is lots of info on the Madonna on site and you tour through the monastary to get a look at it.

Strangely enough, I found the Madonna not as interesting as the location of the Monastary (near the top of a mountain)- the monastary itself and the terrain of the area. To get there you drive a steep winding road for about 20 minutes, great scenery. At the site there are funiculars which take you further up and down the mountain which would provide some great views. To see the black madonna you join a line and tour the church & monastery, the black madonna is at the back of the church.

Quick Tips:

Probably a good place to go with an organized tour. The road is twisty and very steep. Ok to drive if you're used to it. About a half day allows you to see it all, but you should make time. A unique place.
