Visit a bit of Germany, in Georgia

A June 2002 trip to Helen by patty

Visiting Helen, Georgia, is the next best thing to visiting Germany. The main street of Helen, is lined with Bavarian type shops,& restaurants. The Chattahoochee River flows through the center of the town, which makes a great place to cool off on a hot summer day.

Since we drive up to Helen, twice a year-once in the spring to enjoy the town before the tourists arrive; and another time in the fall to see the fall foliage and to enjoy Oktoberfest. The shops make one feel like they are in the middle of a German market place. Many Restaurants serve a German menu and German music can always be heard in the background. Nearby, are many beautiful natural places such as, Anna Ruby Falls; Dukes Creek Falls, Vogel State Park and many more waterfalls to hike to plus the Appalachian Trail is nearby. The Chattahoochee River is a cool place to float, when the temperatures get to hot. Tubing companies take you up river and you can float down at your own pace...makes for a nice relaxing day.

Quick Tips:

Attraction

During September-October, Helen enjoys Oktoberfest. The Festhalle turns into a German festhouse, with visiting bands from Germany, German food and drink, and of course, there is singing and dancing. You can't help but have fun with the new friends you met, at your table. If you visit Helen during Oktoberfest-this is one Celebration you can't miss.
