Overview

While coast areas like Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park are not to be missed, I love to get away to the smaller, less crowded areas like Stonington on Deer Isle. Travel on weekends is sure to mean plenty of tag sales (New England word for yard/garage sales) and flea markets!Quick Tips: The closer you are to Massachusetts, the closer you are to the tourist areas where Mass. folks who aren't going to the 'Cape' go. Travel during the week in the summertime is best. Take the ferry to Nova Scotia! If you are looking for wildlife like moose, it is best to go north. This great house is set along the water and is just down the road from Crockett Cove Woods (fog forest--see other entry). There are three rooms to choose from, and the owners will accomodate families. A family stayed when we were there and occupied the living room and had a family feud! (so it may be best to check about other visitors before agreeing to settle in). The owner provides a yummy and filling breakfast before you set off to explore other areas less explored.

This is a favorite among the locals. Not the best food in the world, but definitely a place to get to know local people and experience their small town culture.

This land is maintained by the Nature Conservancy. While I was there, I only saw one other person. Quiet, beautiful get-away in fog forest - where the fog rolls in and blends with the mossy green forest. Stay at the Crockett Cove Bed and Breakfast just up the lane from the woods!
