Highlights of a fantastic 8-day journey to see the wonders of Alaska up close -- no cruise ship required!

Alaska Adventure

Overview

1. Spending the night in a refurbished train caboose at the Aurora Express B&B -- really neat experience.
2. Denali/Mt. McKinley was a wildlife adventure, going 86 miles into the park to see Caribou, Grizzlies, Moose, Foxes, Sheep, Eagles...
3. Whitewater rafting in Healy was great fun
4. Day cruising the Kenai Fjords is superb, beautiful scenery and wildlife
5. Taking the tram to the top of Mt. Alyeska had breathtaking views!

Quick Tips:

Skip the cruise ship and start in Fairbanks and work your way to Anchorage/Seward on the coast, staying at B&Bs, renting cars, and using the fabulous Alaskan Railroad to get around

Best Way To Get Around:

The Alaska Railroad is a nice way to cover Alaska's vast distances comfortably in style! Renting a car to enjoy the scenic drives (especially along Turnagain Arm) is a must...
A real train to stay in...!
Stay in one of several refurbished train cars from the Alaska Railroad -- a very unique experience! We stayed in a caboose that had chairs in the 'roof' of the train car where you could read and see a breathtaking view of mountains/river... Breakfasts are family style with a great variety of casseroles, french toast, fruit, etc. For Father's Day the host dressed up in a Moose costume and poured champagne for mimosas and let the Dad's vote on what to have for breakfast! You also get to use the traditional B&B (Forget-me-Not Lodge)next to the train - it has a great den area with a massive curving sofa with wall-to-wall window views of the scenery and a stuffed polar bear that the owner had to shoot after she was attacked! Just a neat place to stay... See the web site for much more details/pictures. Web site: click here
