Overview

Ah, the Outer Banks. North Carolina's barrier islands are awash with history, adventure, and opportunities to relax, sport, shop, and, my favorite, dine (more on that later). visit Cape Hatteras National Seashore (and lighthouse) climb Corolla lighthouse visit Wright Brothers monument in Kitty Hawk beach activities fishing, crabbing Quick Tips: Vacation rental homes are probably the most popular lodging option for the Outer Banks. A handful of companies dominate the market. Shh! secret tip: look for a weekly rental starting on Sunday instead of Saturday (much better traffic patterns). Once you cross the Wright Memorial Bridge,...Read More

Horseshoe Cafe Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant | "The Horseshoe Cafe"

Mostly a Tex-Mex restaurant but they offer many seafood dishes (as do most Outer Banks restaurants). Half the people in my group chose the Southwestern Crab Dip and were not disappointed. We went for a Saturday lunch and there were three family groups and two couples in the place. They have separate dinner, lunch, and breakfast menus.

Pierce’s Pit Bar-B-Q Best of IgoUgo

Pierce's is our must-stop on the way to the Outer Banks. Pierce's BBQ is just north of Williamsburg along the interstate. Follow the bright yellow signs; there are some twists and turns, but you will get there. When you do, make sure you are hungry. The burgers are good but the BBQ is awesome. Also, the burgers take longer to cook, so place your burger order separate from the BBQ stuff. Decisions, decisions! Get ribs (half or full rack, dinner platter or not), catfish, or BBQ (jumbo, regular, or super). One combo (1/2 lb BBQ and chicken breast) does not help. A good bet is to be with someone that will split meals; say, one get ribs and one get catfish (mix and match to create your own combo). ...Read More

Pigman's Bar-B-Que Best of IgoUgo

Not the world's best BBQ but certainly good enough to please most diners. However, the Pigman TV commercials are world-class and you can spend hours watching them at the KDH location. The Duck location (at Wee Winks Square) is for carry-out only. In true Southern tradition, platters come with hush puppies, along with beans and coleslaw. The ribs are tender. Hey, everything is good. What can I say? Try the various sauces on the table. Don't forget to buy a Pigman shirt from the store.

Crawford House Cafe Best of IgoUgo

Most of the accommodations on the Outer Banks make people check out at 10 AM. Making the trek back to Northern Virginia takes 5 to 6 hours. We often stop to eat in Williamsburg or eat before leaving the Outer Banks, but the timing worked that we wanted a place in between. We found Crawford House along highway 168 just before getting to the Virginia border. It is a very nice looking place and clean on the inside. They served mostly traditional Southern dishes. The Sunday lunch special during our visit was chicken livers. I got something else, although I do not exactly recall what. I do remember that platters come with fried okra as a choice. This was a good stop for us that I would return to.

Goombay's Best of IgoUgo

Restaurant

Quote:
Goombay's has the funny name and awesome food. The interior is made so that diners feel like they are underwater. The ceiling shows the bottom of a surfer, fish, other animals, and so on. The kids are fascinated with the aquarium on the entryway; it has a couple of albino frogs. The seafood taco platter is the dish I have had the last few times I have been there. The fish is ground and a bit spicy. No fear, you can make it spicier with the jalapenos. Other sides are fajita-like--cheese, tortillas, lettuce, sour cream. Gator bites is one appetizer that I just have not had a chance to try. Anyone? This is a very kid-friendly place with excellent food for all. Another place where you must get a t-shirt o...Read More
