A travel journal
to Dallas by SCUBA Susan
Quote: Dallas and the surrounding metroplex is a vibrant city full of culture, sports and diversity. DFW airport is the second busiest in the US, so flights are plentiful. There is a drastic difference between Dallas, Fort Worth, and Denton (the "Golden Triangle") and that's why it's so unique and appealing.
Shopping is abundant from outlet malls to the Galleria.
There are also many golf courses in and around Dallas - the Colonial and the Byron Nelson are tournaments played here locally.
Arlington, between Dallas & Fort Worth, is home to the original Six Flags (Over Texas). The water park Hurricane Harbor is across the street. The Texas Rangers play in the new Ballpark at Arlington.
Fort Worth is home to world class museums including the Amon Carter, the Kimbell Art Museum, the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History and several others. The Zoo is wonderful and the Botanical Gardens are also close by. The Fort Worth Stock Yards are a must, and the Bass Performance Hall downtown is outstanding.
Finally, the Texas Motor Speedway and Lone Star Park (horse racing) are both west of Dallas.
Texas is full of lakes. However the best (and biggest) lake is about 60 miles north - Lake Texoma.
If you go in late September / early October, visit the State Fair of Texas at Dallas Fair Park.
Reunion Tower is a great place to go for drinks, but the portions are small and the food is pricey. The tower has a restaurant at the top that revolves as you eat.
Six Flags in Arlington has themed holiday festivals that are great (Halloween, Holiday in the Park at Christmas, etc.)
The best 4th of July show is the Addison "Boom Town".
A less expensive water park is NRH20 in North Richland Hills - free parking and you can bring your own food. About half the cost of admission to Hurricane Harbor.
Another IMAX theater is located at 635 (LBJ) and Webb Chapel Rd.
Watch out for traffic going to Texas Motor Speedway on race days.
Since we are in Texas, some good Mexican food is certainly recommended, but a great independent steak house is a must.
A private car is the best way to see the metroplex so that you have the flexibility to come and go.
