Cabo San Lucas Vacation

A September 2001 trip to Cabo San Lucas by JSutter

Our vacation to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico was extremely enjoyable and we highly recommend this resort to everyone. Our family of 8 adults and 2 teens stayed at the Hacienda del Mar for 8 days in our timeshare booked through RCI.

Absolutely beautiful scenery! We stayed at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar in a 3-bedroom timeshare for our family of 10. The accommodations were absolutely wonderful. Although our room did not overlook the beach, the hotel was right on the beach on the western side of the peninsula, about 10-15 minutes from town. The entire resort was beautifully landscaped and the staff members were helpful and courteous. We highly recommend taking the boat to Lover's Beach (watch out for the waves when you cross around to the arch).

Quick Tips:

You will be barraged with timeshare representatives immediately after leaving the airport gate who will offer you all kinds of deals if you visit their timeshare. I recommend you negotiate with a few as you will save significantly on rental cars, golf, diving, and get a few free meals. You will run into the sales people on the streets in town which gets very old after a while. I got great deals on glassware by shopping around. I dove with Amigos del Mar but was very unhappy with the divemasters reckless disregard for sealife on two of the dives in marine sanctuaries. If you dive, Cabo Pulmo is a very long drive (2+ hours) but I did see some very interesting sealife and thousands of small rays! Restaurants are fairly pricey but you can find good deals in small places if you look around. The spa at the Sheraton offers a nice massage service as well. This is a very touristy destination and prices will not be as low as you might find in Cozumel or Cancun.

Best Way To Get Around:

If you stay at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar you will need a rental car. You can catch a taxi (van) that is one way in front of the Hard Rock Cafe. If you fish, the airport security will NOT allow you to carry on coolers of fish on the airplane if they see it.

Cabo Real Golf
Best Things Nearby:
It is located about 15 minutes from town where all the restaurants and shopping are located, but is definitely a relaxing, beautiful place to go. Plenty of world-class golf very close by.

Best Things About the Resort:
The rooms were gorgeous and comfortable.

Resort Experience:
We booked our stay at the Sheraton Hacienda del Mar Vacation Club for our RCI exchange week. The accommodations were fantastic. We had a 3 bedroom (1 king and 4 queen/full size beds), 4 bath, fully furnished 2-story apartment with a sleeper sofa in the living room. Beautiful decor with balconies from all rooms. The landscaping was lush and colorful. The beach was clean and the water an azure blue. Plenty of room for privacy (with the exception of the peddlers selling jewelry and other local crafts) makes for a very relaxing environment. The restaurants were good but expensive (great lobster dinner right on the beach). The spa was very nice and offered a variety of services including a very deep, relaxing massage. It is a 15 minute drive from the main points of attraction such as restaurants and shopping. Due to bad weather offshore the beaches were not suitable for swimming due to undertow and I understand that is the norm for certain times of year. It was a place that I would highly recommend and would go back again in the future. Be sure to take a look at the stars at night...absolutely amazing view!

Lover's Beach
To get to Lover's Beach you will have to take a water taxi to get there. Depending on the weather the ride can be slightly bumpy and when you arrive at the beach you will have to jump into shallow water from the boat to walk to the beach. This is a good area for snorkeling if the water is calm. (The dive boats take you to the rocks just offshore for a great variety of sealife.) We went in the first week of September and the beach was largely exposed. From the point where you reach the beach you will have a short hike to around the rock to get to the beach under the arch. If the water is rough, I HIGHLY recommend you watch where the waves are landing before going around the back side of the rock. We were almost sucked into the ocean when a huge wave crushed us against the rocks unexpectedly and tried to pull us in. We had to time the waves and then run between them to get there. It is worth it! A very romantic site (my boyfriend tried to propose to me several times there but was unsuccessful due to family interruptions!). Great rock formations and caves. There are a lot of seals sunning themselves on rocks. You will have vendors selling beer (at a premium)! This was the most memorable site for us.
